Cricket 1907
J uly 4, 1907. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 247 NORTHAMPTONSHIRE v. DERBY SHIRE. Played at Northampton on June 27, 28 & 29. Northamptonshire won hy eight wickets. Thu visitors made a very poor start by losing Wright to the third ball sent down and Ollivierre at 9. Morton, batting an hour for 12, helped Needham to add 26 for the third wicket, whilst Cadman stayed with the latter whilst 43 were put on for the fourth. Needham made his 42 out of 121 in one hundred and sixty minutes, playing a useful, but very slow, game. Near the end of the day’s play Humphries and Hallam added 46 together for the eighth wicket, and, when stumps were drawn, on account of rain, nine were down for 189. On the following morning the innings closed without addition, Thomson (G. J.) having secured half the wickets for 52. Crosse, who was missed at 15 and 26, made 57 in forty-fiveminutes inpartnership with Kingston, who stayed in until 86. Pool and Cox put on 39 for the third wicket in forty minutes, but the most attractive cricket of the day was shown by A. R. Thompson, who hit five 4’s during the hour and a-quarter he was in. It was due largely to him that Northants were able to claim a lead of 41 on the innings. Upon going in the second time, the visitors lost Ollivierre to a brilliant catch on the boundary at 12, and Wright, after batting an hour, at 46. Needham and Hallam fell in quick succession, and at the end of the day Derbyshire, with six wickets in hand, were only 32 runs on. On Saturday, Cadman was lbw at 93 and Warren bowled 5 later. Morton, however, batted well, but took eighty minutes to add 28 to his overnight score. The innings closed for 122, Thompson taking seven wickets for 42 runs and making his record for the match twelve for 94. The home side were left only 82 to win, and this number they succeeded in making for the loss of a couple of wickets, Crosse and Kingston scoring 68 together for the opening partnership.
