On Monday rain prevented a start being made until three-quarters of an hour after the scheduled time, and when play did commence the wicket was dead and the outfield slow. Makepeace was caught at the wicket at 20, and at 44 Hornby was bowled. Tyldesley, who was missed in the slips when 4, was in partnership with 3barp at the end of the first day. Play lasted only fifty minutes altogether, during which time the home side scored 48 and lost a couple of wickets. On Tuesday Tyldesley, after helping to put on 39 for the third wicket, was caught when nine short of his thousand for the season. Stanning and MacLaren, who captained the side, afterwards added 43; the former played a very fine gamej and made his 46out of 81 in ninety minutes: he made seven 4’s, and hit well to the off and leg, but was missed at the wicket when 31. The last five wickets fell for 38 in thirty-five minutes, the innings, after lasting one hundred and seventy minutes, closing for 164. Notts lost Turner at 34, and when rain stopped play had two wickets down for 67, Iremonger being not out 32. Yesterday nearly an hour was lost owing to a late start being necessary on account of the rain. Ire monger took his score to 57 and batted 135 minutes for his runs : it was a valuable effort, but did not show him at his best. The latter batsman tried to hit, but, apart from Alletson, failed and paid the penalty. Still, the home side could claim a lead of 20 on the innings. When Lancashire went in the second time a draw was practically assured, but, had it not been for a useful display by Tyldesley and Sharp, a complete collapse would have occurred. As it was, the venture realised only 123, the majority of the batsmen being quite unable to face Wass and Hallam. Tyldesley, in making his 34, had the satis faction of completing his thousand runs for the season. Score and analysis :— L a n c a s h ir e . First innings. A.H. No play at all was possible on the first day, but on the second fifteen wickets went down for 320 runs. On a slow wicket Somerset lost half their side for 20 in three-quarters of an hour, but the situation was improved considerably by Woods and Hodgkinson who added 57 for the sixth wicket. Against Haigh, who took four wickets for 15 runs, the tail collapsed, and the innings closed for 93. Yorkshire lost Tunni cliffe to a good catch at 5, after which Denton and Rhodes added 123 together in eighty minutes. Den ton made his 81 out of 147 in one hundred minutes, giving no chance and hitting eleven 4’s. Hirst and Burton did little, but Grimshaw and Myers offered a successful resistence and were still together when played ceased with five wickets down for 227. On Wednesday the home batsmen scored quickly, and when two more wickets had fallen for 33 the innings was declared closed. Grimshaw and Myers (who hit eight 4’s) put on 76 in all for the sixth wicket in 55 minutes. Somerset, left 167 to save the innings defeat, made a good start, Palairet and Braund making 83 for the first wicket. Of the others, how ever, only Woods reached double figures, Haigh and Hirst carrying all before them. The innings closed for 122 and Yorkshire won as stated. Score and analysis:— S o m e r s e t . On Monday it was not found possible to commence until just before throe o’clock, and during the three hours play was in progress Sussex scored 190 for six wickets. The elder Relf was sent back at 13 and Killick, who followed, made only 7, whilst Goldie was bowled as soon as he had reached double figures. Vine, however, batted steadily and well, and found a good partner in Fry; together, the pair added 72 for the fourth wicket in sixty-five minutes. Vine, after batting one hundred and forty minutes, was fifth out at 59 ; he made strokes all round the wicket, but when 8 was missed by Baker at short-leg. After the fall of the sixth wicket, Leach hit up 46 out of 62 in half-an-hour, and on the following morning remained in until he had claimed 54 of the 70 added for the seventh wicket with Nason in three-quarters of an hour. The last-named and Cox afterwards put on 68 together without being separated, the score, when play was abandoned for the day, being 266 for seven wickets. On Wednesday Nason, who batted on each of the three days, was caught at the wicket with only four added : although he gave a couple of chances, he played very well during the hour and three-quarters he was in. Upon facing a total of 299, Warwickshire fared badly. Weldrick was sent back at 6, Charlesworth at 11, Kinneir at 17, and Baker at 20. Fishwick, Moorhouse, and Hargreave made fair scores, but the side had to follow-on 170in arrears. The fielding of the home side left much to be desired, and Warwickshire were fortunate to make as many as 129. In their second innings bad light stopped play when 50 had been made for two wickets.
