T H E S O U T H AFRICANS. 9 th M a tch .— v. W ARW ICK SH IRE . Played at Edgbaston on June 17, 18 and 19. The South Africans won by 276 runs. The Warwickshire committee again omitted Har greave from the side, the bowling in consequence being not so strong as it might have been. The South Africans started in poor fashion, loosing Sherwell at 14, Shalders at 24, Nourse at 25, and White at 38. Santall took three of the wickets, and at 46, when half the side were out, got Faulkner caught at the wicket. Hathorn saved the side from collapse, and was well supported by Sinclair, Snooke and Schwarz. With the first-named he put on 50 in thirty-five minutes, and with Snooke 115 for the eighth wicket in one hundred minutes. He batted three hours and a half for his faultless 117, and, hitting well all round the wicket, made eleven 4’s. Snooke, who hit five 4’s, was rather lucky, and Schwarz played a free game for 55 minutes. After lasting fours hours and twenty minutes, the innings closed for 296, Santall having taken seven of the wickets for 77 runs. In the half hour remaining at the end of the day, the county scored 34 for the loss of Weldrick’s and Charlesworth’s wickets. On Tuesday the start was delayed for about thirty minutes through rain, and with only 15 added Barbery was sent back. Kinneir, after being in just over an hour, was stumped for a patient innings of 27, at 61, and with 73 on the board Baker was bowled. Following these disasters came a very welcome stand by Quaife and Lilley, who put on 102 for the sixth wicket whilst together. Lilley showed capital form in making his 63, and reached his 50 out of 77 in fifty-five minutes. White obtained a few wickets at small cost, and the innings closed for 202. The South- Africans, leading by 94, made 102 for three wickets before play ended, Sherwell scoring 46 and Nourse carrying out his bat for 41. Yesterday’s play was rendered noteworthy by a fine innings by Nourse, who batted 215 minutes for 127 without a mistake of any kind : he hit eight 4’s, and,, if rather slow at times, was always worth watching. When 318 had been made for six wickets the innings was declared closed, the County being set 413 to win. Warwickshire lost their first wicket at 22, and their second at 29. This bad start appeared to un-nerve the batsmen, who fell rapidly against Schwarz, Vogler, and White. To the great disap pointment of the spectators the innings closed for 136, leaving the tourists victorious as stated. The South Africans had the best of the game throughout, and deserved to win. Played at Manchester on June 17, 18 and 19 Drawn. Although lacking the assistance of H. K. Foster, Worcestershire did extremely well on the openingday. They were given a splendid start by Bowley and Poarson who made 161 together for the first wicket in a hundred and thirty minutes, Bowley then being sent back for a very meritorious innings of 100: he gave no chance and hit fourteen 4’s. Pearson, who was once missed by Sharp, batted 175 minutes for his 62, staying in until the total had reached 186. Burns, Cuffe, and Burrows made useful little scores, but the innings closed for 265. Hornby made 42 of the 02 put up for the first Lancashire wicket, and after his dismissal Makepeace and Poidevin were soon sent back, and when play ceased for the day three wickets had fallen for 66in eighty-five minutes. On Tuesday no play was possible on account of rain. On the third morning Cuffe bowled admirably, and it was due chiefly to him that the outstanding seven wickets fell for (31, his analysis for the innings being six for 47. The wickets was certainly somewhat against run-getting, but poor batting had agood deal to do with the collapse. In the second innings of the visitors, Foster and Bowley put up 47 for the first wicket, but by the time the interval arrived four other men had been sent back for an additional 53. The innings was then declared closed, and Lanca shire were left 105 minutes in which to obtain 239 to win. They had no difficulty whatever in saving the game, and when the match was abandoned just before five o’clock had made 166 for two wickets. Score and analysis :— W orcestershire .
