The ground on the opening day favoured the bowlers to such an extent that, during the four hours’ play as many as twenty-eight wickets went down for 218 runs, seven of them being due to lbw. Ire- monger made 13 of the first 14 runs scored by the side, and John Gunn and Jones added 31 for the second wicket. Mead, however, was at his best, and wickets fell fast—three of them in an over. In 100 minutes the whole side had been disposed of for 100, Mead taking eight wickets for 39 runs, and Reeves the remaining two. Essex lost Douglas without a run, and. although Fane and Perrin added 20 together, five wickets were down for 30. McGahey and Reeves put on 18 for the sixth before the latter was sent back by Wass, who took a terrific return very well indeed. In 70 minutes the side were out for 59, Hallam taking six of the wickets for 18 runs, and Wa?s the remaining four for 33. Notts were thus able to start their second innings with a lead of 41, and, although only Iremonger and Hardstaff reached double figures, the visitois, at the close of the day, were 100 runs on with a couple of wickets in hand—practically a win ning advantage considering the state of the ground. HardstafT’s 2(5 was very good, and ranked as the highest effort of the whole game. On Friday, Essex were left 118 to win. They lost Douglas bowled at 17 and Fane caught at the wicket at 29. Perrin fell at 33 in trying to get the ball round to leg, and at 35 McGahey was finely caught low down in the slips. Meston, who might have been stumped ere making a run, and caught at point very soon afterwards, added 26 with Freeman and 30 with Buckenham : altogether, he batted an hour for his excellent 23. Kortright was bowled in trying to drive at 105, and two later Russell was l.b.w. Mead then went in, last man, with eleven required to win, but the runs were not made, Buckenham, after being i n for an hour, falling a victim to Hallam for 23. In the whole match ten players were dismissed l.b.w., although many appeals were disallowed. Hallam bowled admirably, and took thirteen wickets for 56 runs. Score and analysis N otts . First innings.
