W. 18 2 5 ... 4 ... 4 3 LEICESTERSHIRE v. SURREY. Played at Leicester on June 3, 4, and 5. Surrey won by 45 runs. On account of the heavy rains, play in this match did not commence until half-past twelve on the second day. Hayward reappeared for the visitors, but Lees was kept out of the game by a chill. A surprising start was made against Jayes and Odell, Hayward and Hobbs being sent back at 5 and Holland at 8. Hayes, too, did not reach double figures, but he helped Crawford to put on 22 for the fourth wicket in ten minutes, after which the latter and Baker added 37 for the fifth in twenty-five minutes. The amateur, who hit a couple of 6’s, played a fine game, and made his 41 out of 59 in thirty-five minutes. Baker batted an hour and three-quarters for 43, and with Goatly added 41 for the seventh wicket in half-an-hour. The innings closed for the disappointing total of 139, only four men reaching double figures. Whitehead and Wood gave the home side so good a start that 51 were made in 40 minutes before a separation was effected. The later players, however, with the exception of Odell, failed to show such fine form, but Leicester shire nevertheless obtained a lead of three on the innings. J. N. Crawford supplemented his batting with some excellent bowling, taking half the wickets for 47 runs. With the close of the innings stumps were drawn. Yesterday Hayward and Hobbs made 110 together for Surrey’s first wicket, but not with out luck, the former being missed with only 4 scored. After lunch Astill took five wickets for five rims, the innings closing summarily for 138. Leicestershire were left with 136 to win, but against Rushby and Crawford found rungetting a difficult matter and were all out for 90. Score and analysis: S urrey . First innings. Crawford Rushby Hobbs ... Hitch YORKSHIRE v. KENT. Played at Leeds on June 3, 4 and 5. Drawn. On the first day play did not commence until after half-past three. During the hour and-a-halfthe game was in progress, Yorkshire lost Rhodes, Tunnicliffe, and Kaye for 78. The visitors were unfortunate in being unable to receive the assistance of Blythe, who was in bed, suffering from a chill. Denton and Tunnicliffe added 48 in 50 minutes, and the former and Hirst 19 at the end of the day without being separated. On the second morning the light was very poor when the match was resumed, and Denton was quickly sent back for a very useful 45, which took 90 minutes to compile. Hirst scored 53 out of 82 in 80 minutes, but was twice missed—at mid-on when 11, and from a difficult chance at long-on when 41. Wilson, after being in for 32minutes, wasbowled without a run, and, against Mason and Hardinge, the last five wickets fell for 9 runs, the innings, after lasting three hours, closing for 150. Hardinge, who took four wickets lor 20 runs, and Mason, who took two for 3, were the most successful bowlers. Kent lost Hardinge in Hirst’s second over, Seymour at 10, and Hutchings at 35. Dillon, too, made only a single, and when Woolley, who batted an hour for 18, was caught, half the side were out for 38. When eight wickets had fallen, a short adjournment was found necessary on account of the poor light, and, upon resuming, the innings was speedily con cluded for 78, Haigh taking six of the wickets for 34 runs. In their second innings Yorkshire, who led by 72, lost their first four wickets in half-an-hour against Mason and Hardinge, but Rhodes and Hirst then added 36 together without being parted, the state of the game, when play ceased for the day, being that Yorkshire, with six wickots to fall, were 137 runs on. Yesterday, play was quite out of the question owing to the state of the ground. Score and analysis:— Y orkshire . First innings. Second innings. NORTHAMPTON SHIRE. Played at Edgbaston on June 3, 4, and 5. Warwickshire won by 125 runs. The weather was cheerless and the wird cold on the first day, and not very many people attended to witness the game. Charlesworth and Quaife batted very well, but the feature of the day’s cricket was the bowling of Thompson, who was not tried until the score had reached 137 for three wickets. He bowled Baker, dismissed Lilley lbw, and got Hilditch caught off a no - ball with consecutive deliveries, and his last over got rid of Hilditch, Santall, and Moorhouse in four balls. Thompson at one period bowled three overs for five wickets and a run, the last five wickets of the side falling in five overs for four runs. The visitors lost Crosse, Cox, and Vials for 11, but Pool and Thompson afterwards remained together until the close, when the total was 45 for three wickets. In all, they put on 64 for the fourth wicket, but, only East and Wells of the others on the side reaching double - figures, the innings closed for 124, Hargreave and Santall proving very successful with the ball. Warwickshire played so well for a time in their second innings that when the score was 150 only four wickets were down. Charlesworth scored his 59 out of 82 in 70 minutes, hitting a 6 and six 4’s, and Quaife was in an hour and a-nalf for 34. After the tea interval, however, the last six wickets fell for 28 runs in 40 minutes.- Thompson took six wickets during the innings for 77 runs, making his record for the match twelve for 116. Northamptonshire, set 262 to win, fared so badly that in forty-five minutes they lost seven wickets for 36 against Santall and Hargreave, who were almost irresistible. Although yesterday’s play was sadly interfered with by rain, there was suf ficient time to enable the home side to win by 125 runs. Buswell made a great and praiseworthy effort for his side, and was so well supported by Wells that the last three wickets added a hundred. Score and analysis:— W arwickshire . First innings. T. S.
