Somerset won by six wickets. So greatly did the conditions favour the bowlers on the opening day that twenty-one wickets fell for 247 runs. There hod been a thunderstorm during the night, and Palairet upon winning the toss decided to send Sussex in. Whether the home side gained as much advantage by the policy as was anticipated is doubtful, for the wicket did not improve during the day. Lewis and Bailey bowled unchanged during the hour and a-quarter Sussex were in, the former performing even better than his figures would suggest. Leach made 24 out of 31 in a quarter of an hour, and at the end of the innings Cox and Butt put on 22 in ten minutes. Somerset lost Palairet at 23, but Lewis, although missed by Simms off Killick when 1(5, played a good game and hit nine 4’s during the hour and a-half he was in. The last six wickets fell in just over half an hour for 33, but as the result of the two hours and three-quarters’ batting the home side established a lead of 46 on the first innings. Sussex had forty minutes batting at the end of the day and during that time scored 21 for the loss of the elder Relf’s wicket. On Tuesday morning Vine and Killick remained together for fifty minutes, during which time they added 56 for the third wicket. Vine made 25 out of 77 in an hour and a-half, and Killick 34 out of 56 in similar time. Half the side were out for 80, but Goldie hit up 22 out of 26 in twenty minutes and, Leach and Smith adding 28 for the eighth wicket in similar time, the total eventually realized 105. Leach, hitting five 4’s, made 40 out of 84 in 55 minutes. Somerset were set 120 to win. Palairet, hitting seven 4’s, claimed 49 of the 69 made in an hour with Braund for the first wicket, and Deane played a useful innings. Braund batted two hours and a-quarter for his valuable 42, and carried out his bat when Somerset had won by six wickets. Score and analysis :— S ussex . First innings. Surrey, winning the toss, put Gloucestershire in, and by the end of the day had established a sub stantial lead, notwithstanding that both Hayward and Knox were away. So busy were bowlers thafy ere stumps were drawn, twenty-one wickets fell for 300 runs. Gloucestershire, who were without Godsell and Barnett, commenced batting in a poor light. They lost Wrathall, caught in the slips off Lees’ first over, with only a single scored, Langdqn caught, at the wicket at 6, and Board out to a simple catch in the slips at 8. Jessop hit a 4 and a couple of singles, but was held at the wicket at 16, Spry fell at 28, and Winstone, who had been in forty minutes for S, was sixth out at 30, after the innings had lasted an hour. The wicket began to improve about this time, and the tail did fairly well, Ford and Huggins adding 17 for the eighth wicket in forty minutes. Lees, who made the ball turn considerably, took seven wickets for 33. Surrey lost Hobbs at 11, Hayes at 39, and Goatly at 56. Crawford then joined Holland and a productive stand was the result. Together they added 61 for the fourth wicket in forty-five minutes, but Holland was let off .three times and Crawford twice—all off Dennett. The former drove well and hit nine 4’s in his bright innings. Lord Dalmeny made some powerful off- drives, but the last three wickets fell very quickly. Before stumps were drawn Gloucestershire, going in the second time, scored 10 for the loss of Winstone. On the following morning Mills was out first ball, after which some brisk batting was indulged in by Board and Langdon, who added 80 for the third wicket in just under the hour. The former and Wrathall put on 3S for the fourth in as many minutes, but Jessop again failed, being out second ball. Lewis and Huggins both left at 140, and only Ford of the later players reached double-figures. Board made his 67 out of 143 in two hours and a-half, cutting and driving with great precision : he hit two 5’s and six 4’s. Lees took six wickets for 10 runs each during the innings, his record for the match being thirteen for 93. Surrey, left 44 to win. obtained that number without lo.ss, Crawford hitting freely and making 33 of the runs. Score and analysis :— G loucestershire .
