Cricket 1907

170 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M a y 30, 1907. against Essex, and at Canterbury two years ago Lancashire punished the Kent attack to the extent of 467 for seven wickets, the home side having in each instance gained choice of first innings and put the visitors in. O n Mondav evening Mr. C. T. Studd, the famous Eton, Cambridge and Eog- land cricketer, who gave up the game in order to became a missionary, delivered an address at the Bishop of London’ s evening gospel meeting in Hyde Park. He recalled that in his youth he played cricket near where he was then standing, and stated that it was at the wish of an Atheist that he went out to do mission work in China. O n Monday evening the South Africans were the guests at dinner of the M.C.C. in the members’ dining pavilion at Lord’s. The chair was taken by the President of the Club, Lord Loreburn, the Lord Chancellor, and among those present, in addition to the guests, were the Earl of Jersey, Lord Harris, Messrs. A. J. Webbe, W. H. Patterson, C. E. Green, J. R. Mason, E. L. Bateman, H. K. Foster, Henry Perkins, P. F. Warner, E. G. Wynyard, A. J. L. Hill, H. D. G. Leveson-Gower, L. P. Collins, and F. E. Lacey, the Secretary. A co in ciden ce ! On Tuesday, the first ball delivered in the matches at Manchester, Taunton, and the Oval ob tained a wicket. I t seems probable that Southend-on- Sea will this year have a cricket week. At a meeting held on Monday evening the Mayor, Councillor R. King, stated that the Essex County C.C. had offered them the matches with Northamptonshire and Surrey, to be played at the end of July and the beginning of August, pro vided that the necessary guarantee was forthcoming. The sum mentioned, I understand, was £500. G eneral the H on . S ir N. G. L yttel ton , K.C.B., a member of the famous cricket brotherhood, has been appointed to the command of the Forces in Ireland.
