Cricket 1907

M a y 23, 1907. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 157 it was not until 100 had been made in sixty-five minutes that the latter was bowled. The captain was missed by Marshal in the slips when 35, but reached 50 out of 80 in 55 minutes, and hit ten 4’s. Knox had not bowled long before he was obliged to leave the field again on account of lameness. Geo. Gunn helped Iremonger to add 66 for the second wicket in 55 minutes, whilst John Gunn and the latter put on 123 for the third in 95 minutes. Iremonger made his 130 out of 189 in 225 minutes without a flaw, driving strongly and playing skil fully on the leg-side. By the end of the day, when Notts were 464 runs on with half their wickets in hand, John Gunn had made 77 not out in just over two hours by vigorous cricket. Yesterday morning the innings was at once closed, and Surrey, with a whole day before them, were set 465 to win. They lost Hobbs at 2 and Hayes at 37, but Marshal, who made 96 out of 143 added with Holland for the third wicket, played a good game after opening rather unsteadily. Gordon was in half-an-hour without scoring, but Lees and Knox made some good hits and alone of the later batsmen rendered Holland much aid. The last-named played a splendid game, and made his 72 out of 202 in 195 minutes. Notts won by 202 runs. Score and analysis N otts . First innings. Second innings. A. O. SUSSEX y. KENT. Played at Brighton on May 20, 21 and 22. Kent won by an innings and 243 runs. Kent had almost their strongest eleven for this match, for, although Hutchings could not play, Blaker, Dillon and Mason appeared. For the first time since his accident last year at Lord’s, Fry assisted Sussex. Kent gave a very bright display on the opening day, totalling 409 for six wickets in two hundred and seventy-five minutes. The feature of the play was the batting of Woolley and Hardinge, who made 214 together for the first wicket in one hundred and thirty minutes, ere the latter, for the second time within a few days, was dismissed for 99. Woolley played a very good game, although he was missed when 11 and 25. He was strong on the on-side, made some fine drives, and hit eleven 4’s. Hardinge, who gave no chance, was third out at 268 after batting one hundred and seventy minutes for 129—his first three-figure score for Kent. He made fifteen 4’s, the majority of them capital strokes on the off-side. Dillon and Mason added 64 in forty minutes, following which rain delayed.play for fifty minutes. By the end of the day Dillon had taken his score to 71. On Tuesday, the latter was caught at the wicket in the first over. He drove well during the hundred and five minutes he was in, and the innings, after last ing just over five hours, closed for 445. Sussex gave a shocking display upon going in, losing Vine at 5, the Relfs and Killick at 11, and Smith at 35. Leach afterwards made a few good hits, but the whole side were out for 67. In their second innings they again cut a sorry figure, losing eight wipkets for 133 runs before play ceased for the day. Vine made 39 out of 121 in one hundred and sixty-five minutes, but, apart from Killick and the younger Relf, no one else did much. Yesterday morning the game was quickly finished, Kent gaining the easiest of victories. Score and analysis:— K ent . Although Monday was a dull and cheerless day, and there was a cold wind, 7,044 persons paid for admission. Warner and Tarrant made a fine start, the pair scoring 89 together in eighty minutes ere the former, who should have been stumped when 30, was bowled. Tarrant was very slow at the start, being in half-an-hour before making a run, but afterwards improved considerably and, in all, batted 115 minutes for 52. MacGregor played a very use ful game, going in when six wickets had fallen for 171, and with Litteljohn adding 45 and with Murrell 57 in half-an-hour. Litteljohn, who was very strong on the leg-side, played the best innings of the day. Owing to rain there was no play between ten min utes to four and five o’clock, whilst when the last Middlesex wicket fell stumps were drawn for the day. On the following morning Palairet was adjudged out with only a dozen scored, but Johnson and Braund put on 119 together in 95 minutes. The amateur, who hit six 4’s, was decidedly lucky, and was missed when 13 and 21. Braund, who hit seven 4’s whilst making his 59 out of 137 in 115 minutes, was missed when 28, but made no other mistake. After lunch the last six wickets fell for 42 runs in forty minutes, the home side being able to claim the very useful lead of 50 on the innings. This advantage, however, was soon lost, for, with only 20 scored, Warner and Beldam were out from successive balls. Bosanquet was bowled at 54, and shortly afterwards Lewis left the field. In the latter’s absence the prospects of Middlesex improved, Tarrant and Litteljohn putting on 56, the latter, who made his 52 out of 93, again playing a free and attractive innings. Trott and MacGregor afterwards made some good hits, and when time arrived Somerset, with all their wickets in hand, had been set 264 to win. Yesterday some remarkable play was seen. Palairet and Braund made 56 together, but with 21 added Trott dismissed Lewis, Poyntz, Woods, and Robson with consecu tive balls, Lee only just escaping from being a fifth victim, the ball going for 4 byes. A little later he again did the hat-trick, at the expense of Mordaunt, Wickham, and Bailey, thereby creating a record and finishing the match in summary fashion. His feat will be found referred to in “ Gossip.” Braund, who at one time was in for half-an-hour without making a run, played a very steady game, and carried his bat through the innings.
