Cricket 1907
M ay 23, 1907. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 149 WORCESTERSHIRE v. YORKSHIRE- Played at Worcester on May 16, 17, and 18. Worcestershire won by 54 runs. The home side were without G. N. Foster, Hutchings and Simpson-Hayward in this, their opening match of the season. Winning the toss they made a fine start on the good wicket. Foster and Bowley scoring 88 for the first wicket, and the former and Pearson adding ‘26 for the second. Foster made his 63 out of 114 in 95minutes and hit nine 4’s, whilst Pearson, who batted 85 minutes and made eight 4’s, also hit well. Burns and Swalwell obtained useful scores, but the three last wickets went down without a run, the innings closing for 292. By the end of the day Yorkshire had lost Rothery for 20 runs. On the Friday the wicket was still good, but the visitors failed against Arnold and Cliffe, and were all dismissed for 119. The two bowlers did excellently to dismiss so powerful a side for such a small total, and the victory which Worcestershire eventually gained was chiefly due to this perform ance on their part. Worcestershire, with a lead of 173, were deprived of the services of Bowley when they went in the second time, and were disposed of for 139, although Foster and Pearson made 57 together for the first wicket. The former was again seen to advantage, and made his 54 runs out of 95 obtained whilst in. Set 313 to win, Yorkshire made 58 without loss in the remaining 50 minutes, but on the third morning lost wickets so rapidly that by lunch time seven were down for 151. Myers played on at 81, Tunnicliffe and Denton left at 89 and 98 respectively, and Wilkinson and Rhodes were both sent back at 110. Hirst played on at 148, and after Hawke was lbw at 176, Rothery and Hunter pluckily added 82 for the ninth wicket in 55 minutes. The innings was ended abruptly by Burrows bowling Hunter and Deyes with consecutive balls, leaving Worcestershire victorious by 54 runs. Rothery played a very meritorious innings of 53, notwith standing that he gave a chance very soon after lunch. Score and analysis:— W orcestershire . First innings. H. K. Up to the tea interval on the second day, when they led by 147 runs and had six wickets in hand, Derbyshire had none the worst of the game, but they were afterwards outplayed, and had to acknow ledge defeat by seven wickets. It must not be for gotten, however, that they were deprived, through an accident, of the services of Warren, their best bowler. In their first innings, after Wright had been sent back for 11, Ollivierre, hitting two 5’s and four 4’s, made 35 out of 50 in 25 minutes. Cadman was bowled by a ball which smashed the middle stump, but Morton and Humphries added 66 for the fifth wicket, and the former and Cooper 41 for the seventh. Morton made some fine off-drives and strokes to leg, hitting a 5 and nine 4’s, and batted 140 minutes for his faultless 67. Surrey made a dis astrous start when going in against the total of 216, Hobbs being bowled in playing forward, Hayward and Marshal sent back in one over, and Holland bowled. In this way four of the best wickets had fallen for 31 against Bestwick and Cadman. Craw ford then came in and played a splendid innings. With Hayes he made 73 in half-an-hour, and with Dalmeny 74 in similar time. He hit well all round the wicket, his chief strokes being two 5’s and nine 4’s, and altogether made 82 out of 172 in 90 minutes. Strudwick afterwards hit hard, the ninth wicket producing 37 in a quarter of an hour, and the tenth 25. The visitors’ second innings was noteworthy for a fine display by Wright, who made 93 out of 154 in 130 minutes by a great variety of strokes. He hit nine 4’s, and, apart from a possible chance of caught and bowled when 79, made no mistake. With Buckston he added 53, and with Morton 77. The last six wickets fell for-47, and, after lasting four hours, the innings closed for 243, leaving Surrey 195 to win. Hayward caused a little sensation by being caught in the slips first ball, but Hayes and Hobbs practically won the match by putting on 145 for the second wicket in 90 minutes, 45 at one time being added in a quarter of an hour. Hayes hit brilliantly, and during the 80 minutes he was in made nine 4’s. Hobbs and Marshal scored 43 together, after which the former and Holland obtained the few remaining runs. Hobbs played a very sound game, making his 79 out of 197 in 135 minutes without a mistake. Ho hit six 4’s. Score and analysis:— D erbyshire . First innings. L. G. Wright, lbw, b Lees 11 O. A. OXFORD UN IVERSITY v. LANCA SHIRE. Played at Oxford on May 16 and 17. Lancashire won by nine wickets. The University were struggling from the outset, for, on a wicket which appeared good, they lost their first four wickets in three overs for 7 runs, Dean, after he had taken three in his second over, having then an analysis of four for one run. Half the side were out for 21, but Wright and Hoskin each made 28, and a total of 91 resulted. Dean took eight wickets for 43. Lancashire lost Makepeace for a single, but Tyldesley and Poidevin put on 118 together for the third wicket in 100 minutes. The first-named hit well all round the wicket whilst in, and made a dozen 4’s. Poidevin was slower, hitting only one 4, and taking 135 minutes to make his half- century. The last seven wickets fell for 50 runs, Lowe taking five for 18, and the innings closing for 188. The University gave a slightly better display when they went in the second time, but were all dismissed for 127. Gordon, who batted an hour for 26, scored 39 with Foster for the third wicket, whilst Wright and Bowring put on 28 for the fifth. The County, set only 31 to win, proved successful by nine wickets.
