Cricket 1907
M a y 16, 1907. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 141 punishment. Yorkshire lost four wickets for 63 runs, and ten minutes later “ a curious thing hap pened.” Rhodes, when he had made a single, was caught low down at point by Spry, who tossed the ball high into the air. Rhodes, however, appealed and, as the view of each umpire was obstructed, the batsman was given the benefit of the doubt. The stand for the fifth wicket realised 31, and at the close Yorkshire, with half their wicket in hand, were only 34 behind. Heavy rain prevented any play on the second day. Yesterday the wicket was very tricky and some curious cricket was seen. So com pletely did the Yorkshire tail curl up against Dennett, that Gloucestershire were able to claim a lead of 19 on the first innings. The home side did as well as could be expected in making 115 against the strong Yorkshire attack, and were unfortunate in losing Wrathall to a ball which glanced off his pads on to the wicket. The visitors were set 135 to win, and, after some excitement, obtained that number for seven wickets. Denton played a very great game, and was primarily responsible for the victory. He hit ten 4’s and gave no chance during the two hours he was in. Gloucestershire, consider ing how weak a team they had, did well to give their opponents so close a game. Neither side was at full strength for this match, the County lacking the services of Hornby and Makepeace, and the University, owing to examin ations, being without all the Blues with the exception of Payne. This was the first occasion since 1882 that the two sides had met. On account of showers it was not found possible to commence play until a-quarter to one, when, Cambridge having won the toss, Payne went in and gave a magnificent display of hitting. He reached 50 out of 74 in sixty- five minutes, 100 out of 155 in two hours, and, in all, scored 129 in one hundred and forty-five minutes without a mistake of any kind. His hitting on the off-side was very severe, and among his chief strokes were fifteen 4’s. Upon his departure a new ball was requisitioned, the old one having lost its shape. It was due very largely to Payne’s big hitting that the first wicket realized 53 and the second 90. Goodwin, making seven 4’s, obtained 47 in half an hour, but Palmer was very slow in comparison, taking an hour and three-quarters to make 52. The last wicket added 44 in thirty-five minutes, and when the innings closed for 366 play ceased for the day. The second day was so wet that play was quite out of the question. Yesterday’s play was noteworthy for the success attending Goodwin’s leg-breaks on a tricky wicket: they disposed of seven men for 33 runs in the first innings, and five for 29 in the second. Elderton caught three and stumped three, and Cambridge won by an innings and 204 runs. Score and analysis :— C ambridge U niversity . M. W. Payne, c Wors ley, b Kermode ...129 C. C. G.
