Cricket 1907
134 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M ay 16, 1907. LEICESTERSHIRE v. LANCASHIRE. Played at Leicester on May 9,10 and 11. Lancashire won by eight wickets. The home side did poorly to make no more than 161 in their first innings, for the wicket, although slow, was not difficult. The outstanding feature of their display was furnished by Coe, who scored 46 in 65 minutes and in partnership with V. F. S. Craw ford put on 40 for the fifth wicket. He hit nine 4’s, but was missed by Poidevin in the slips when he had made 14. The new captain, Hazlerigg, gave acurious display, being in for 40 minutes and then carrying out his bat for a single. Lancashire found run- getting no difficult task, Hornby and Makepeace making 115 for the first wicket in 75 minutes before the former was caught in the long-field. He was very strong on the on-side and made some good square-cuts, and hit a 5 and ten 4’s. Makepeace played a slower, though not less valuable game, claiming 65 out of 18/ obtained during the 125 minutes he was in ; he hit nine 4’s. At the end of the day Lancashire had established a lead of 39 and had seven wickets in hand. On the next morning Sharp and Heap were soon out, but Poidevin found a useful partner in Harry, with whom he put on 70 for the sixth wicket iu 50 minutes. The Australian, who was missed at tlie wicket when 41, cut and drove well, and made his 75 out of 186 in 160minutes; his chief strokes were seven 4’s. The innings closed after lasting four hours and a-quarter. Leicester shire, 164 behind, lost Wood, caught in the slips in the first over, and the younger Crawford for 41. vVhitehead, fortunately, settled down to a good game, and received very fair support. Knight helped to add 88 for the third wicket in 75 minutes, V. I1'. S3. Crawford 66 for the fifth in 35, and Jayes 56for the sixth. Vivian Orawford made some superb drives and, hitting a 6 and eight 4’s, scored his 45 in just over the half-hour. Whitehead carried his bat right through the innings, batting 220 minutes and hitting a 6 and thirteen 4’s. He made some capital cuts and drives, but was twice misfeed—by Heap in the slips when 8, and by Dean at cover-point when 99. On Saturday morning Lancashire entered upon their task of making 108 to win. Tyldesley was found in his best form and, cutting and driving well, and hitting a 6 and eight 4’s, scored 52 out of 79 in 40 minutes. Lancashire hit off the required runs in 65 minutes and won by eight wickets. Score and analysis:— L eicestershire . First innings. C. J. B. Wood, b Dean ... 7 Whitehead, run out .......... 4 R. T. So mucli rain had fallen during Wednesday night and Thursday morning that at noon on the latter day it was decided that no play would be possible until the morrow. Kent were not at full strength, neither Mason, Bumup, Blaker, nor Huish playing. The opportunity was therefore taken of again includ ing Hardinge and Hubble in the side. On Friday, under a hot sun, the wicket was against run-getting and during the day as many as twenty-six wickets fell for 311 runs. Woolley was out to Tarrant’s second ball, and Seymour sent back at 17. Hum phreys, who made his 26 out of 57 obtained whilst in, played a very good game and helped Marsham to put on 26 for the seventh wicket. The innings closed for just under the hundred—a score by no means poor when the state of the ground is remembered. When the M.C.C went in Wrathall hit up 16 of the first 18 runs, whilst Warner batted 25 minutes for 4. Half the side were out for 44, and when the seventh wicket fell at 46 Blythe had taken five wickets for eight runs. Collins gave a very sound display for 33, batting 65 minutes, but the County were able to claim a lead of 23 on the innings. Woolley was again disposed of without a run, but Hardinge and Seymour then indulged in the partnership of the day, adding 85 for the second wictcet in an hour and a-quarter. The latter played the best innings of the match and was unfortunate in being dismissed through playing-on. Half the side were out for 94, but Humphreys and Hubble made useful scores, and at the close of the day Kent were 159 runs on with four wickets in hand. Blythe and Fielder hit merrily for a time on the last morning, the result being that the Club were set 208to win. The wicket had improved considerably, and a good finish was expected. Tarrant and Warner made 43 together for the opening partnership, but at lunch-time three wickets were down for 61. After the interval Fielder proved to be in splendid form, and altogether took seven wickets for 51 runs. Tarrant, although slow, played a very good game for his side, and carried his bat right through the innings. Kent won by 93 runs. Score and analysis K ent . First innings. Played at the Oval on May 9, 10 and 11. Surrey won by an innings and 162 runs. The weather was so showery and overcast in the morning that it would have occasioned no surprise if no play had been found possible during the day. But at noon the sky cleared aud a brilliaut afternoon was experienced. Play commenced at twenty min utes past two. Surrey had their strongest eleven, Knox playing for the first time this season, but Essex were, for various reasons, deprived of the services of Perrin, ilie Turners, Douglas and Car penter. The visitors gained some advantage by winning the toss, but the bowling was so good and true that the play was slow. Fane played a most valuable game, and batted an hour and a-half for his 32; with Freeman he made 19 for the first wicket, and with McUahey 52 for the third in just under the hour. Crawford, keeping a good length and getting on considerable break, was found to be iu great form when he went on for the second time, at 75: he bowled 10 overs, 3 maidens, for 17 runs and five wickets, the last seven wickets going down for 41. McGahey, who scored 37 out of 86 whilst in, made some good drives and had the satisfaction of obtaining the highest score on the side. Surrey lost Hobbs to a bailer at 18, but Hayes hit well and with Hayward played out time, the score when stumps were drawn being 72 for one wicket. When play was resumed on the second morning the ground had quite recovered, and run-getting was found no difficult matter. Hayes, hitting a 5 and five 4’s, made 53 out of 84 added with Hayward in 70 min utes, whilst Marshal claimed 22 of the 54 put on for the third wicket in an hour. It was during the latter partnership that Mead’s hand was bruised by a hard return from Marshal which occasioned his retirement from the game until after lunch. Hay ward, although beaten once or twice by the ball, played excellent cricket, and after Marshal was stumped found two useful partners in Holland and Crawford, adding 63with the former and 86with the latter. He readied his 50 in 125 minutes, 100 in 195, and altogether scored 161 out of 320 in four hours and a-quarter without-a mistake of any kind. He made some capital drives and strokes to leg, and hit a 5 and fifteen 4’s. Dalmeny and Lees indulged in a merry association, putting on 69 in 23 minutes, but the innings afterwards fizzled out rather quickly, Mead bowling his last 20 balls for five runs and four wickets. The total of 411 was made in 3U0 minutes, and gave Surrey the substantial lead of 287. Essex, when they went in the second time, lost Freeman and Gillingham for 27, but Fane and McGahey added 36 without being parted ere play ceased for the day. On Saturday morning but little resistance was made against the bowling of Crawford and Lees, and before one o’clock the match was over, Surrey being left victorious by an innings and 162 runs. Crawford obtained eleven wickets in the match at a cost of six runs apiece, bowling admirably in each innings. On the last day he took five wickets in 32 bails for 17 runs.
