Cricket 1907

M ay 9, 1907. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 125 close of the M.C.C. innings, play ceased for the day. On Tuesday no play was possible on account of rain, whilst yesterday it was found impossible to resume until a quarter past twelve. Tarrant and Trott bowled admirably, and caused such a collapse that in 75 minutes nine wickets had fallen for 93. Bain then came so persistently that at ten minutes to three it was decided to abandon the game. Score and analysis:— Y orkshire . First innings. PAYNE’S X II. Played at Cambridge on May 6, 7 and 8. Mr. Payne’s Side won by ten wickets. Of several good batting displays given on the opening day, that by Mackenzie was probably the best, although when he had made 14 he was missed at mid-off, He hit a 5 and nine 4’s during the 50 minutes he was in, and in partnership with Gimson added 113 for the fifth wicket. Cole showed sound cricket during the three hours he was in, whilst at the end of the day Bottom© who carried out his bat for 67, hit well, but was twice missed. On Tnesday the last-named, during the 55 minutes that play lasted, took his total to 138, reaching his hundred after batting 85 minutes. Yesterday Bottome was soon out, after having batted on each of tbe three days for his 141, which lasted two hours and contained twenty-four 4’s. With Reunert, who was in 160 minutes and hit nine 4’s, he added 106. Armstrong did very well to take seven wickets for 95 in an innings of 335. In the second innings of Morcom’s Side F. L. Cole batted for Rawlings, who was injured. Mr. Payne’s Side obtained the necessary runs for the loss of one wicket. Score and analysis :— M r . A. F. M orcom ’ s S ide . Second innings. G. L. OXFORD SENIORS’ MATCH . THE HON. C. N. BRUCE’S X I. v. M r. C. S. HURST’S X I. Played at Oxford on May 6, 7, and 8. Drawn. The cricket on the opening day was devoid of incident until near the close, when Hoskin took three wickets in his first over without a run being made off him. During the innings of the Hon. C. N. Bruce’s X I., Jolly, who kept wicket, caught two and stumped one and allowed only one bye in a total of 224. On Tuesday play was considerably curtailed by rain. There was, however, time for Hurst’s side to complete their innings for 118, and for Bruce’s to lose three wickets for 105. The best batting of the day was shown by Cruwys and Raynor, although the former was missed ere he had made a run and the latter before he had reached double figures. Yesterday, in improved weather, Bruce’s side took the score to 183 for the loss ot' another wicket and then declared, the captain, who hit seven 4’s, playing a good game for his 57. Hurst’ s side, set 290 to win, quickly lost a couple of wickets, but Clarke and Worsley made amends by adding 93. Seven wickets, however, had fallen when rain caused the game to be abandoned.
