426 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. S ept . 20, 1906. team. The general lack of cohesionamongst the players is, the committeestate, illustrated by three things : “ (a) Slackness in the field; ( b) a lack of grit and determination on critical occasions, and anabsence of espirit de corps ; ( c) neglect by players in certain instances to travel with the rest of the team overnight.” To remedy the dearth of re serves the Committee recommend that the number of young players engaged on the ground be increased, and placed under a coach chargedwith the general supervisionof the ground staff, and that, generally, the Kent county system of managing the ground staff shall be followed. OBITUARY. J ames S treet . James Street, who, for several years, rendered very great service to Surrey cricket as a fast round-armed bowler, died at his residence at Godalming on Monday evening. As he was bom at Cranleigh, in Surrey, on March 10th, 1840, he was in his sixty-seventh year at the time of his death. He was the youngest of six brothers, all of whom played for Cranleigh, andone of whom— George (“ Cork”)—was for several seasons ground-keeper at the Oval. James was a member of the County Eleven from 1863 until 1876, as well as in 1878. His bowling performances for Surrey were as follows:— Year. Runs. Wkts. Aver. 1863 Did not bowl. 1864 164 ... 5 3280 1865 222 ... 12 18-50 1866 56 ... 1 56 00 1867 77 ... 4 19-25 1868 765 ... 43 17-79 1869 . 1184 ... 42 28-19 1870 . 1325 ... 58 ... 22-84 1871 . 1310 ... 56 2339 1872 907 ... 60 1514 1873 1157 ... 65 17-80 1874 . 1374 ... 65 21*13 1875 . 1273 ... 55 ... 2314 1876 . 1310 ... 49 2673 1878 382 ... 21 1819 Totals ... 11506 ... 536 21-46 He and the late James Southerton generally opened the Surrey bowling together, and in the match against Kent at Maidstone, in 1872, the pair bowled unchanged throughout both innings. Against Nottingham, at theOval in 1868, Street took four wickets for 11 runs, in cluding that of RichardDaft. As abats man he was a good hitter, although few long scores will be found to his name. In the Middlesex match at the Oval in 1870, however, he played an inniDgs of 50 against the bowling of Rutter, Howitt, R. D. Walker and TomHearne. In 1880 the match at the Oval between Surrey and Yorkshire was set apart as a benefit for him, and, although that year was a very wet one, the match was favoured with fineweather. After ceasing to play for the County, Street umpired in first- class matches for 23 years, and continued to participate in club matches; he could, indeed, claim to have played the game for over half-a-century. He had coached at bothWellington and Cranleigh, giving much satisfaction. A. E. Street, who played several times for Surrey during the nineties, was his son. PELHAM v.
