OnThursday last England continued their innings, holdinga lead of 321 withhalf their wickets in hand. Spooner played on in Fielder’s first over andRhodes was caught in tho slips off Blythe, the two wickets going downwith only a single added. Buckenham and Lees then became associated andadded 49 for the eighth wicket before Marsham, going on at 344, got Buckenham caught off the first ball he sent down. At this point "Warner declared the innings closed, leaving Kent 250 minutes inwhich to obtain 372 to win—a not impossible task. With only 8 runs on the board, however, Burnup was caught, and thirteenlaterDillonwas bowled, Kent thus losing two of their best batsmen for a trifle. Seymour and Hutchings added 28 for the thirdwicket before the latter, to everyone’s disappointment, was caught from a skyer. Woolley helped Seymour to put on 38 for the fourth, the latter then being caught for aplucky, though somewhat lucky, innings of 48. He was missedwhen he had made -23, and again by Lees, and at his departure four wickets were down for 79- When Humphreys was sent back half the side were out for 85, whilst at 103 Woolley, who was let off by Hayward when he had made 7, was caught off Buckenham. At 113 the Essex fast bowler loweredthe wickets of Marsham and Huish with successive balls, and seven later sent back both Blaker and Fielder. In the whole innings Buckenham took sixwickets for 45, obtaininghis lastfive in six overs for 5 runs. His success recalls the bowling of Pougher in the Surrey v. England match on the same ground eleven years before, the Leicestershire bowler coming intothe side at the last moment, like Buckenham, and taking nine wickets in the first innings of the County for 34. Kent’s collapse was due more to bad batting than to any other cause, and it must be admitted that their poor display came as a great disappointment. In the whole match 1,221 runs were scored for 38 wickets. England wonby 251 runs. Score andanalysis:— E ngland . First innings. R H.
