South Africa won by nine wickets. The batting of the Englishmen was, on the whole, most disappointing, but Fane played an excellent second innings. On the other hand, most of the South African team did well, and Sinclair greatly distinguished him self, his innings of 62 including a 6 and seven 4’s. In the second innings of the English men eight men could only score 16 runs between them. E ngland . First innings. Second innings. P. F. South Africa won by 243 runs. For the third time in succession the M.C.C. team lost in the test matches. The South Africans won the toss, and made such good use of their opportunity that their innings produced 385 runs. Nourse played a most useful defensive innings, which lasted for two hours and a quarter, but the hero of the day was Hathom, who, in about the same time, scored 102. Nearly all the other members of the team did well. On the Monday the M.C.C. were disposed of for 295, and were thus 90 runs behind. The only outstanding innings was the 143 by F, L. Fane, who played splendid cricket for four hours. Snooke and Schwarz bowled un commonly well. On the Tuesday the South Africans again distinguished themselves greatly with the bat, White, who had made 46 in the first innings, scoring 147, hitting two 6’s and nineteen 4’s in about four hours. Tancred, Nourse and Sinclair were all in great form. The visitors had to make 440 to win, and as they lost two wickets for 14 before stumps were drawn, their chances of victory were small. On the next morning Denton and Crawford played well, but most of the team could make nothing of the bowling of Snooke, who took eight wickets for 70 runs. S outh A frica . First innings.
