388 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. S e p t . 6, 1906. but a great batsman also. Hirst’ s numerous triumphs have been even more invaluable to Yorkshire than Hayward’ s large scores to Surrey, and greater praise than that it would be difficult, if not impossible, to bestow. What position the county would have occupied in the Championship Table had he not been available, it is impossible to say, but it would assuredly not have been so high as the second. It is quite possible to say that Hirst was the Atlas of the Yorkshire teamwithout in any way underestimating the value of the services of the other members to the side. For some years past he has been generally acknow ledged as the finest all-round player in the world, but this season he has been better than ever before. His record of over two thousand runs and more than two hundred wickets is unique for a single season’ s work in first-class cricket. In minor matches, however, the double feat has been often performed. In 1863 Dr. E. M. Grace made 3,074 runs and took 339 wickets in all kinds of cricket, and in two other seasons—in 1881, when his figures were 2,770 and 253, and in 1883, when 3,166 and ‘250—did he take 250 wickets and score 2,500 runs. When “ E .M .” and “ W .G .” were in their prime first-class matches were far fewer than they are nowa days, so in order to fill up their time they had to participate in second-rate contests. In 1874 “ W .G .,” in all matches in which he took part, obtained 267 wickets and made 2,847 runs, whilst in the following year his figures were 330 and 2,684 respectively. BATTING AVERAGES. The following score, which gives par ticulars of a match between the St. Cyprian’s and Parkdale Clubs, played on the Saint’s ground at Toronto, on August 11, is of special interest for a noteworthy bowling perform ance by Holt for the former. In seven overs he took nine Parkdale wickets (eight cleaned bowled) for ten runs, doing the hat trick with his last three balls. As Packer was run out, he got all the wickets which fell to the bowlers in the innings. BOMBAY GYMKH ANA v. H INDU GYMKHANA. This match, played on the former’s ground on August 12, had been looked forward to with great interest. Unfortunately, rain in the early morning had made the wicket sticky, and the Hindus, using it to better advantage, had an easy victory in the end by 108 runs. Score :— B om bay G y m k h a n a . R.
