By F. 8. AsHLB-r-OoorBB. B y their victory over Hampshire at Bourne mouth on Saturday, Kent not only secured the Championship — a distinction they thoroughly deserved—hut also gained the right to meet England at the Oval on Monday next. The last match played between the two sides, in which the County did not receive odds, took place at Lord’ s in 1862, when England, owing largely to a fine innings of 73 by Mortlock, of Surrey, won by an innings and 23 runs. Of the twenty-two men who took part in that match seven survive, —the Eev. J. A. Pepys, F. H . Norman, G. M. Kelson, W . S. Norton and Fryer of Kent, and the Hon. C. G. Lyttelton, now Lord Cobham, and George W ootton of the England side. Lyttelton, who was then only nineteen years of age, and in his second year at Cambridge, was bowled without scoring, but had the satisfaction of leading the winning eleven.
