372 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A ug . 30, 1906. discussed at the next meeting of the Advisory Committee. Tt is seldom indeed that such a display as INIr. Higson gave in the Lancashire v. D erby shire match at Manchester last week is seen in any kind of cricket. His partnership with A. H. Hornby must rank as one of the most extraordinary things seen during the se<son. After being in for half-an-hour without scoring he was joined by Hornby and immediately made a run, after which he remained inactive for a further period of forty minutes, during which time his vis-h-vis scored 5 4 off the reel. Altogether, Hornby made 74 out of 84 in an hour; the other ten runs were composed of five by Higson, four, byes and a wide. No more remarkable instance of masterly inactivity than shown by the latter has been seen this year, as the appended short table, giving brief particulars of the “ best” instances of the kind which have occurred during the season will show :— 0 runs in 40 mins.—Grimehaw, Yorkshire v. Lanca shire, at Bradford. 0 „ 40 „ T. A. Higson,Lancashire v. Derby shire at Manchester. 0 „ 30 ,, J. N. Crawford, Surrey v. Notts., at the Oval. 0 „ 30 ,, F. H. Gillingham, Essex v. Lan cashire, at Leyton. 0 ,, 30 ,, T. A Higson,Lancashire v. Derby shire, at Manchester. There are several instances upon record of a batsman going in first in a minor match and performing the somewhat Gilbertian feat of carrying his bat right through the innings without making a run. Tuesday last was quite a red-letter mark in George Hirst’s career, seeing that, in addition to obtaining six wickets in an innings, he succeeded in completing hi3 2,000 runs for the season and, for the first time in his career, in making two separate hundreds in a match. Hirst has this year been a better all-round player than ever before, so his latest success — “ A hit, a palpable h it !” — is the more welcome. He has now done so many great thingB as batsman, bowler and fieldsman, that, like Alexander, he w ill soon be sighing for fresh worlds to conquer. In any case, apart from taking all ten wickets in an innings, there are few notable feats left for him to perform. His best double successes as a batsman in Yorkshire matches have been as follow s:— 55 and 58, v. Hants., at Southampton ........... 1896 111 and 92, v. Gloucestershire, at Bradford ... 1900 54 and 72, v. An England XI.,at Hastings ... 1901 108* and 59*tv. Worcestershire, at Worcester 1905 51 and 103*, v. Sussex, at Leeds ................. 1905 111 and 117*, v. Somerset, at Bath ................... 1906 * Signifies not out. By his two big scores at Bath this week, he joins the still very select band of batsmen who can claim to have made two separate hundreds in a first-class match as well as over 300 in a single innings. The list of such players is now composed of W . G. Grace (three times), A . C. MacLaren, P. A. Perrin, Major R. M. Poore, V . Trumper, Hayward and Hirst. It is a curious circumstance that all four of the instances occurring this year of a player making two separate hundreds in a match have been credited to professionals, whereas last season six of the seven similar feats performed were by amateurs, Llewellyn, of Hampshire, being the only paid player included in the list.
