E ssex was the sufferer, and his baw lin g, w h ich show ed seven w ickets for 35 runs in the second knock o f the E ssex team , did m uch to decide the gam e in favour o f L ancashire. This summ er he has fu lly upheld his reputa tion as an all-rou n d cricketer. His record in first-class cricket has given him an aggregate o f 947 runs fo r tw en ty - seven innings, w h ich places him in the first tw enty-five batsm en o f 1906. A thorough tryer under all conditions, he is quite in the forefron t o f profes sional cricketers. H is b ow lin g gets up qu ickly from the p itch , and, com in g back from the off w ith his pace, makes him very deadly at times. A s a batsm an he has a great variety o f strokes, and when set scores very freely.
