Cricket 1906
A u g . 23, 1906. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 365 of 55 in under the hour, but the only other players to make any serious resistance to the bowling were Arnold and Burrows, who put on 52 for the ninth wicket in twenty-five minutes. Arnold carried out his bat for a capital 46, made in 115 minutes. Dennett obtained eight wickets in the innings for 69 runs, again showing what fine form he is in at the present time. Worcestershire followed on, 376 behind, and lost Pearson and Bowley for 27. Burns made a few good hits, and Cuffe and Crowe added 40 for the seventh wicket in 20 minutes, but the innings closed for 146, leaving Gloucestershire with the easiest of victories. During the day Dennett took 15wickets for 110 runs, bowling splendidly on a ground in favour of run-getting. The fielding of the home side was always reliable, and often brilliant. On the first day the visitors remained in for the whole of the afternoon, scoring 374 for eight wickets. A capital start was made by Devey and Kinneir, who put up 101 for the first wicket in one hundred and fifteen minutes. Devey, who m ight have been stumped when 35, hit seven 4’s, whilst Kinneir took two hours and forty minutes to make 54. The feature of the day was the batting of Fishwick, who scored 135 in two hours and a-half without a mis take, making a 5 and eighteen 4’s and hitting to leg and driving well. W ith Quaife he put on 78 for the fourth wicket in sixty-five minutes, and with Lilley 72 for the fifth in thirty-five. On Tuesday the innings quickly closed for the addition of 4 runs, Jayes, when he dismissed Moorhouse, taking his one* hundredth wicket of the season. On a wicket affected by rain, the home side found run- getting no easy matter, Whitehead being sent back at 8 and K night at 23. W ood and K ing added 57 for the third wicket in fifty minutes before the former, who scored 39 out of 80 in eighty-five minutes, was disposed of in a curious manner. He played a ball on to Lilley’s chest, and it rebounded on to the wicket, removing a bail, whilst he was out of his ground. Coe and V. F. S. Crawford added 70 for the seventh wicket in seventy minutes, the former, who hit ten 4’s in his 68, batting one hundred and ten minutes for 68, during the com pilation of which he was twice missed. At the end of the day seven wickets were down for 215, the side then requiring 13 to save the follow-on. Yester day morning the last three wickets added only a dozen runs and the home side were required to follow-on. 151 in arrear. W ood was bowled with out scoring a run, and Whitehead again failed, the outlook for Leicestershire at this point being the reverse of encouraging. K ing and Knight, how ever, improved the situation by adding 59 for the third wicket in 85 minutes, but at lunch four were down for 66. After the interval Vivian Crawford was soon sent back, but a splendid stand was made when his brother joined K ing. Playing careful and watchful cricket, as the occasion demanded, the two gradually pulled the game round for their side, and K ing reached 118ere being stumped. Reginald Crawford continued to do well, and was still not out when, with the score 280 for nine, the match was drawn. Score and analysis W arw ickshire . NOTTINGHAM SH IRE . Played at Brighton on August 20, 21 and 22. Sussex won by eight wickets. Some very slow and lifeless cricket was seen in this match on the opening day, thirteen wickets realising only 237 runs in four hours and a half. The only bright display of the day was furnished by Jones, who scored 54 out of 112 in on9 hundred and ten minutes. Dwyer and A. E. Relf bowled unchanged throughout the innings, which lasted two hours and realised only 117. Vine and Latham made 55 for the first wicket of Sussex in seventy minutes, but not without luck, for both were missed in an over from Wass at 46. Vine batted for one hun dred. and thirty minutes for 47. whilst Killick was in for an hour and a quarter for 26. When, just before six o’clock, bad light stopped play, Sussex were 3 runs on and had seven wickets to fall. On the following morning Dwyer and Simms were sent back in the first two overs for the addition of a couple of runs, but the elder Relf then settled down to good cricket, and added 85 for the sixth wicket in sixty minutes with his brother, and 82 for the seventh in three-quarters of an hour with Cox, who made his 51 in sixty minutes. Relf, who, like Cox, had the satisfaction of com pleting hia thousand runs for the season, hit well all round the wicket, making 112 out of 177 in one hundred arid thirty- five minutes without a mistake, and hitting a 5 and fifteen 4’s. After lasting five hours the innings closed for 344. In a minority of 227, Notts lost Iremonger, Jones and Gunn in their second innings for 41, and it was chiefly due to Hardstaff and Pay ton, who added 93 for the fourth wicket in seventy minutes, that the total by the time stumps were drawn had been advanced to 174 for five wickets. Yesterday Branston and James remained together until they had put on 70 together for the sixth wicket in an hour. The former, who played a fine game, was at the wickets for 80 minutes for his 60. At one time James was in for 25 minutes without scoring. In obtaining the necessary 19 runs to win, Sussex lost Vine and Killick against Iremonger. Score and analysis N otts . First innings. A.O.
