Johnson away, Somerset were deprived of the services of their best batsman, but it would be idle to pretend that his absence would have reversed the result of the match. On the first day rain pre vented any play from taking place before a quarter to one. From the very first ball sent down Hum phreys was dismissed, but Seymour, who drove well and hit eight 4’s, added 101 for the second wicket in 65 minutes in partnership with Burnup. Following this, the latter and Mason put on 84 for the fourth in three-quarters of an hour before the Old Malvernian was sent back for an innings of 73 made out of 190 in two hours. Burnup, who was missed when 35, played a valuable game, but was never really com fortable. Mason was in for an hour and a-half for his faultless 72, which included twelve 4’s and was a good all-round display. The last five wickets went down in 35 minutes for 68 runs, the innings closing for 274. Somerset, in response, lost half their wickets ere play ceased for 70, although. Martyn and Braund made 31 together for the opening partnership. On the next morning the innings closed for 107, and Kent, although leading by 167, did not call upon their opponents to follow-on. The visitors’ second innings was remarkable for some very fast run-getting. Burnup and Woolley com menced by making 51 for the first wicket in twenty minutes, but the pace was considerably faster after the fall of the third wicket, 244 being added for the loss of a couple of wickets in 77 minutes. Burnup and Mason made 70 for the fourth in half-an-hour, Burnup and Humphreys 116 for the fifth in 35, and Burnup and Blaker 58 without being separated for the sixth in 12 minutes. Mason made many fine drives, but was twice let off—when 27 and again when 29. Blaker hit up 35 out of 58 in a dozen minutes, m aking 24 (2,6, 6, 2, 4, 4) off an over from Bailey, who was punished for 188 in twenty-two overs. Burnup, who made runs all round the wicket, scored 169 out of 358 in 144 minutes, and hit a 6 and twenty-two 4’s. He might have been stumped when 31, but gave no other chance. When 358 had been made for five wickets in 144 minutes the innings was declared closed, Somerset being set 526 to win. Martyn and Braund made 78 for the first wicket in 80 minutes, but, when stumps were drawn, four were down for 93. On Saturday the remaining six wickets fell in an hour, despite the fact that Maxwell and Bailey added 61 for the ninth in half-an-hour. Kent won in the easiest fashion by 354 runs.
