356 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A ug . 23, 1906, 31.5 ..12 ... 49 ... 6 24.2 ... 6 ... 58 ... 6 19.4 ... 7 ... 40 ..10 31 ..12 ... 48 ... 5 46.2 ... 5 ..113 ... During the present month the bowling of Dennett has quite dwarfed everything else in connec tion with Gloucestershire cricket, his repeated triumphs improving the status of the side immensely. In his last five matches he has performed as follows:— Overs Mdns.Runs Wkts. |v. Middlesex, at Bristol. |v. Essex, at Bristol. |v. Kent, at Cheltenham. |v. Sussex, at Cheltenham. j v. Worcestershire, at Chel- | tenham. which yields a return of 57 wickets for 5 )1 runs, or 10.36 each. This is a record which recalls to mind the performances of C. L. Townsend in his great years of 1895 and 1898. In August of 1895 the last-named took 94 wickets for 12.37 runs a piece in eight matches for Gloucestershire, obtaining as many as 59 in the last five, whilst at the end of the season of 1898 he took 64 wickets in the concluding five matches played by the county. Although Dennett’s bowling has, therefore, been surpassed in Gloucestershire cricket, so far as number of wickets obtained is concerned, his feats in taking all ten wickets in an innings, and obtaining as many as 15 in a single day, are unique. His record of 15 wickets for 140 runs against Worcestershire, at Cheltenham, on Tuesday, was the more extraordinary from the fact that he obtained them on a wicket which did not lend him any assistance. At the moment of writing I can recall only the following instances of a bowler taking as many as 15 wickets in a single day in a great match:— 16 for 38, Emmett, Yorkshire v. Cambridge shire, at Hunslet................................................. ]869 16 for 52, Southerton, South v. North, at Lord’s 1875 16 for 69, Wass, Notts v. Lancashire, at Liver pool ..............................................................19C6 15 for 28, Briggs, England v. Leicestershire, at M a n ch ester..................................................1889 15 for 68, Watson, I^ncashire v. Cheshire, at Nantwich..............................................................1892 15 for 68, Tate, Sussex v. Middlesex, at Lord’s... 1902 15 for 76, Blythe, Kent v. Hampshire, at Ton bridge ..............................................................1904 15 for 85, Mold, Lancashire v. Notts, at Notting ham ..............................................................1895 15 for 95, Tyler, Somerset v. Sussex, at Taunton 1895 15 for 96, Tyler, Somerset v. Notts, at Taunton 189' 15 for 98, Parris, Sussex v. Glouces.. at Bristol 1891 15 for 140, Dennett, Glouces. v. Worces., at Cheltenham...................................................... 1906 Tyler, it will be seen, is the only player who has performed the feat more than once in inter-county cricket. The defeat of Surrey at Sheffield yesterday practically assures Yorkshire retaining the Championship for another twelve months. That they have shown the best form of any county throughout the season can hardly be said, for there will be found few to deny that, on the whole, Kent have given a better display. Still, although the season is almost over, something may yet happen to depose the present leaders from their position. For Hirst the season has been a veritable triumph, for whenever he has been called upon for a great effort—and such an event has often happened—he has been equal to the occasion, either as batsman or bowler. It may well be doubted whether he has in any previous season been seen to better advantage as a batsman, for whenever runs have been of moment to the side he has proved worthy of the confidence placed in him. It is no exaggeration to state that, since “ W.G.’s” prime, no better all-round exponent of the game has been seen anywhere. All students of cricket will agree that no finertribute could be paid to Hirst’s greatness than for his county, for which he has done so much, to again obtain the Championship. MARLBOROUGH BLUES v.
