Cricket 1906
A u g . 16, 1906. _ CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. 343 soon as he had got the measure of the bowling, making 100 in 160 minutes and, in all, obtaining his 198 in 225 minutes. He hit well all round the wicket and gave only one chance—when 163: he hit a 5 and thirty-three 4’s and, with Cuffe, put on 106 for the sixth wicket in 40 minutes. A t the end of the day the visitors had scored 374 for seven. On Saturday the follow-on was saved, the innings closing for 406, or 139 behind. In Somerset’s second innings John son was again seen to advantage, scoring 109 notout in two hours and twenty minutes by perfect cricket. As he made 96 in the first innings he only narrowly escaped the distinction of obtaining two separate hundreds in the match. W ith four wickets down for 208 the innings was declared closed, and, when the visitors had lost Bowley and the Fosters cheaply a definite result appeared by no means unlikely. Pearson and Arnold, however, added 72 for the fourth wicket in 55 minutes, and after that a drawn game was always assured. Pearson batted for 115 minutes for his 105 not out. playing a very free game and giving no chance. Score and analysis First innings. H. Martyn,b Arnold ... S o m er set . 11 P. R.
