A u g . 1 6 , 1 906. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 341 WARWICKSHIRE v. DERBYSHIRE. Played at Edgbaston on August 9, 10 and 11. Drawn. During the first few minutes play was in progress Fishwick, fielding in the slips, effected three brilliant catches, Derbyshire losing W right and Oadman for a single, and Needham at 14. Morton helped Hallam to put on 41, but the poor start was never retrieved. Hallam scored 68 out of 129 in 170 minutes, showing capital defence, and hitting a 5 and four 4’s. Best wick made a few big hits, but the innings closed for 162. The Warwickshire bowling and fielding were very good, but bad batting had a great deal to do with the poor total. When the home side went in Devey made 23 out of 34 in 20minutes, and Fishwick 51 out of 111 in 80. By the end of the day 152 had been obtained for the loss of four wickets, Warwick shire then being 10 runs behind with six wickets to fall. On Friday both Quaife and Lilley were seen to advantage, the former, who hit ten 4’s, making 88 out of 191 in 160 minutes, and the latter scoring 57 out of 104 in an hour and a quarter by vigorous cricket. The last few wickets fell quickly, but War wickshire could claim a lead of 141 on the first innings. The visitors gave a much better account of themselves when they went in the second time. W right and Hallam made 101 for the first wicket, the former, who scored 50, hitting only three 4’s. At the end of the day Derbyshire, with seven wickets in hand, were 26 runs on. On Saturday Cadman and Morton, who was in an hour for 13, put on 64 for the fourth wicket, the former hitting a 6 and seven 4’s in an admirable 94 made out of 158 in 160 minutes. Ollivierre also batted well, and the score was taken to 357 ere the innings terminated. Warwickshire quickly lost Fishwick and Charlesworth, but a draw was always a certainty. MIDDLESEX v. SURREY. Played at Lord’s on August 9, 10 and 11. Surrey won by an innings and 92 runs. For this important match Middlesex lacked the services of Bosanquet, Payne and G. W . Beldam, whilst Surrey were at full strength, Knox, who did not play against Notts at the Oval, again appearing. The fast bowler proved himself a great acquisition to the side at the very start, sending back Douglas at 12 and Warner at 25. Tarrant and. H unt then put on 63 together, but the former, who scored 37 in 110 minutes, was twice missed. He and Colbeck were sent back with consecutive balls, six wickets then being down for 116. The concluding portion of the innings was noticeable only for a good display by Wells, who batted an hour and a-half for 39. The last few wickets fell quickly, and the innings closed for 173, made in 220 minutes. Surrey lost Hayward through a questionable decision at 28, but Hayes and Hobbs remained together to the close, when the score had reached 112 for one wicket. On Friday morning the pair continued in partnership until the second wicket had realised 172 in two and a-half hours. Hobbs played a serviceable innings, but was not seen at his best. He scored 69 out of 172 in three hours, but was missed by Douglas when 47. Hayes was in his best form and made no mistake of any kind whilst scoring 155 out of 239 in 195 minutes. He hit well all round the wicket and obtained twenty 4’s. Goatly was seen to advantage against the fast bowling, but the feature of the concluding portion of the innings was furnished by Crawford, who, although twice missed, played a very fine game on a wicket affected by rain. He cut in fine style, and obtained his 70 out of 110 in an hour and a-half. The last few men hit out recklessly, the idea being to let Middlesex have about half-an-hour’s batting at the close of the day. The policy proved a wise one, for,:ere stumps were drawn, the home side lost Wells, Hearne and Mignon for 14. During the day rain interrupted play for an hour and three-quarters. On Saturday Middlesex started the day’s play in the hopeless position of being 232 behind with seven wickets in hand. MacGregor and Douglas added 56 for the fourth wicket in an hour, before the former was out to a splendid catch by Lord Dalmeny. With the score at 19 Crawford went on to bowl, and a great change came over the game, Warner, Douglas and Tarrant all being out at that figure, and Colbeck sent back two runs later. Hunt put on 30 for the ninth wicket with Harrison, and 23 for the last with Trott, the innings closing for 154, and Surrey being left winners by an innings and 92 runs. The home side commenced in fine fashion in this match, Whitehead and W ood putting up 115 for the first wicket in 100 minutes and, after Knight had been sent back by a fine catch at long-off, the latter and K ing adding 89 for the third in 85. Ohallenor helped to put on 41 for the fourth wicket, following which Board, who hit seventeen 4’s and cut and drove with greater freedom than usual, was bowled for a faultless innings of 148, made out o f 262 in 235 minutes. V. F. S. Crawford and Coe added 56 for the sixth wicket in 35 minutes, and Jayes and R. T. Crawford 44 for the eighth without being parted, the score at the end of the day being 388 for seven. On Friday morning the outstanding three wickets went down in an hour for 37, the innings closing for 425. When Yorkshire went in, the bat continued to beat the ball, Rhodes and Tunnicliffe making 108 for the first wicket in 85 minutes, and the former and Den ton adding 164 for the second in two hours. Tunni cliffe, who hit six 4’s, was not seen at his best, whilst Denton, whose 80 included eight 4’s, was missed when 41 and 57. Rhodes also was lucky, seeing that he was let off when 27, 69 and 88. He hit fourteen 4’s, and made his 119 out of 274 in three hours and a-half. A t the end of the day Taylor and Hirst added 40 without being parted in half-an-hour, the score at the drawing of stumps being 314 for three wickets. On Saturday morning Hirst failed to add to his total, but Taylor batted for an hour and three- quarters for 38, Rudston 80minutes for 39, and Haigh 100 minutes for 60,"the two last named adding 65 for the eighth wicket in 55 minutes. When the last man was out, Yorkshire could boast a lead of 58. Leices tershire succeeded in clearing off the arrears for the loss of one wicket, hut, with a draw always inevitable, play ceased at half-past five. Score and analysis L e ic estersh ire . On the first day the home side lost Dillon with only 9 runs scored, but so fine a recovery did the home side make that by the end of the day the total had reached 409 for
