Cricket 1906

324 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A ug . 9, 1906. GLOUCESTERSHIRE v. MIDDLESEX. Played at Bristol on August 2, 3 and i. Gloucestershire won by 121 runs. On a soft wicket Gloucestershire had all the best of the opening day’s play, scoring 261 and getting down half the Middlesex wickets for 89. Huggins, ow ing to indisposition, was unable to appear, but O. O. H. Sewell, for the first time during the season, assisted the home side. Gloucestershire lost Barnett with a single on the board, but a couple of good partnerships improved the position consider ably. Jessop and Wrathall put on 75 for the second wicket in 45 minutes, and the latter and Sewell 97 for the third in 65 minutes, of which number the amateur claimed as many as 71. Sewell, who hit seven 4’s, showed by far the best cricket of the day. He was missed when he had made 41, but hit all round the wicket in fine style. Wrathall played a slow, but very valuable game, batting for two hours and a-quarter for his 50. Brownlee, Townsend and Langdon made useful scores, and, after lasting for 195 minutes, the innings closed for 261. The wicket got worse as the day wore on, and, ere stumps were drawn Middlesex had lost five men for 89. Owing to rain play on the second, day was restricted to two hours and a-quarter, but during that time, so greatly did the conditions favour the bowlers, that fifteen wickets fell for 118 runs. The visitors commenced by losing their last five wickets in half-an-hour for 18, the innings ending abruptly for 107. Dennett took six wickets for 49, and Roberts also did well. Possessed of a lead of 154 Gloucestershire preferred to go in again to making their opponents follow-on, but, apart from Sewell, Board and Townsend, did so badly against Hearne, Tarrant and Trott, that the whole side were disposed of for 100 in an hour and three-quarters. Before Middlesex could commence their task of obtaining 255 to win the rain came down so heavily that further play during the day was impossible. On Saturday the visitors had to bat on a ruined wicket, and never appeared likely to pull off the match Tarrant and Litteljohn batted extremely well in the circumstances but received little support. Dennett again obtained half-a-dozen wickets, and, backed up by good fielding, enabled Gloucestershire to win by 121 runs. Score and analysis G loucestershire . First innings. Second innings. E.
