Played at Blackpool on July 30 and 31. HAT TRICK B Y GREGSON. Lancashire won by an innings and 41 runs. In this, the first inter-county match ever played at Blackpool, neither Findlay nor MacLaren appeared for Lancashire, who had, however, a capital side. On the opening day play was curtailed considerably by rain, there being two interruptions, but, although the game was in progress only four hours, the home side succeeded in scoring 343 for eight wickets ere stumps were drawn. At the commencement of the innings Spooner hit freely, scoring 36 out of 41 in twenty-five minutes, and making eight 4’s and a 3. Tyldesley made 55 out of 96 in an hour by brilliant cricket, hitting eleven 4’s. and, with Makepeace, putting on 66 for the second wicket in fifty minutes. Poidevin, hitting a dozen 4’s, scored 71 out of 136 in seventy minutes without a mistake of any kind, his partnership with Sharp realising 106 for the fourth wicket in sixty-five minutes. The last-named, after settling down, hit well all round the wicket, and at the end of the day carried out his bat for 104. He was twice missed—when 27 and again when 35— and in partnership with Dean put on 59 for the eighth wicket On Tuesday the Lancashire innings closed for 355, Sharp being last man out for 111, which took a hundred and fifty minutes to compile and contained twelve 4’s. Leicestershire upon going in found run-getting no easy matter. With only 21 scored Whitehead and Knight were bowled by successive balls from Dean. The third wicket, thanks to a good start by W ood and King, did not fall until 75, but, so successfully did Gregson then bowl, that the whole side were out for 96. Gregson took five wickets for 8 runs, and dismissed the brothers Crawford and De Trafford with con secutive balls. After lunch the visitors followed on 259 behind, but again early disaster was met with, de Trafford being out with only 4 runs scored. The feature of the innings was a splendid display by Knight, who added 77 for the third wicket with King. He hit thirteen l’s, and batted 100 minutes without giving a chance, but could not save the innings defeat. Lancashire won by an innings and 41 runs. In the whole match Gregson took nine wickets for 76 runs. Score and analysis:— L a n ca sh ire. R. H.
