Cricket 1906

A u g . 2, 1906. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 307 gave was when he made 228 for the Players of England against the Austra lian?, at Lord’s, in 1890, a fcore which still ranks as the largest recorded against Australian bowling in this country. So far as wicket-keeping is concerned Nottinghamshire have always been in the very front rank, with 6uch capable expo nents as Dennis, Brown, Bildulph, Sherwin and Oates to undertake the thankless duties, but it cannot be claimed that the County has ever been particu larly iich in amateur players. In Parr’s time 1here were two excellent cricketers in Messrs. J. G. Beevor and W. Bury, whilst in more recent years Messrs. J. A. Dixon, C. W. Wright and A. O. Jones have gained much distinction upon the tenfed field. In addition, Mr. G. T. Branston, of Charterhouse and Oxford fame, who hails from Newark, bids fair to develop into a most useful all-round exponent of the game. At the present moment Nottinghamshire possess a very strong side, one, in fact, which is capable of extending any team in the country, as was plaiLly shown by their recmt victory over Yorkshire at Dawslury. Further more it is, on the whole, a youDg side, and, even if it cannot boast so fine a bats man as Shrewsbury, so wonderful a bowler as Alfred Shaw, so capable a wicket-keeper as Sherwio, or eo great an all-round player as Barms, it is a team which should occupy a very high position indeed among the counties. May Notting hamshire cricket flourish ! F. S. A.-C. CRICKET IN INDIA . In a match against the Public Works Department Cricket Club, played at Bombay on the 7th July, 1906, the Telegraph Recrea tion Club Team, captained by Mr. N. CJ. K. Leslie, an o’d Gloucestershire cricketer, scored a very easy victory. They disposed of their opponents for the very low score of 6 runs, four batsmen making a single run each and two byes. The Telegraph replied with 161. The remarkable feature of this match was that Mr. A. G. Moore captured the whole ten wickets for 2 runs, thereby establishing a record for India. He also performed the hat trick. Appended are the scores :— P ublic W orks D epartment . First innings. Stevenson, c and b Moore.. Oliver, c D’Silva, b Moore . Murphy, b Moore.................
