GLOUCESTERSHIRE. Played at Tunbridge Wells on July 19, 20 and 21. Kent won by 90 runs. For this match, the second of the Tunbridge Wells Week, Burnup and Woolley appeared instead of Mason and Day. On the opening day no play was possible prior to lunch, owing to rain, but, despite this fact, as many as twelve wickets fell during the day. Seymour and Hearne made an excellent start by scoring 82 together in 80 minutes for the first wicket, the former, who was twice missed when he had made 50, obtaining his 71 out of 106 in 100 minutes, and hitting seven 4’s. Dennett and Jessop afterwards bowled so effectively that the last six wickets went down for 24. the innings closing for 159. Dennett took six wickets for 73 and Jessop four for 23, Before stumps were drawn for the, day Gloucestershire made 82 for the loss of only two wickets, being then but 77behind with eight wickets in hand. For this satisfactory state of things they were almost wholly indebted to Wrathall, who reached 42 out of 50 in 35 minutes, and, in all, scored 66 out of 82 in 70 minutes without being dismissed. On the following morning he failed to add to his score. He hit eleven 4’s. Jessop was soon sent back, and four wickets wore down for 87. Barnett, who was in for an hour and a-half for 22, had one piece of luck during his innings, playing a ball from Blythe on to his wicket without removing a bail. Thomas, who made three 4’s and a 2 in an over off Fielder, scored 32 out of 39 in 25 minutes, but, although Naish reached double figures, tho innings closed for 178. Nineteen runs in arrears, Kent opened their second innings by losing Seymour and Humphreys for 35, but a fine innings by Hutchings, who scored 56 of the 88 added with Burnup for the third wicket in55 minutes, improved matters considerably. Still, six wickets were down for 126, and at this point neither side could claim an advantage. Huish and Marsham, however, added 67 for the seventh wicket in 40 minutes, and the latter and Fairservice 62 for the eighth in 50, the score when play ceased being 287 for eight wickets. On Saturday morning the last two wickets added only 6 runs, the innings closing for 293, leaving Gloucestershire 275 to get to win. Dennett took six wickets for 101- a capital performance in the circumstances. The visitors never appeared likely to make the runs, batsome very bright cricket was shown by Jessop and Thomas. The former made 19 out of 25 in 15 minutes, and the latter 41 out of 46 in half-an-hour. Thomas, who hit particularly well, made nine 4’s. At lunch-time six wickets were down for 140, but, with the first two balls sent down after the interval, Barnett and Spry were bowled by Blythe. Huggins batted an hour for 34, and with Naish added 31. The innings closed for 184, and Kent won the second match of the Week by 90 runs. Score and analysis:— K ent . First innings.
