J u l y 26, 190G. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 293 YORKSHIRE v. SOMERSET. Played at Huddersfield onJuly 19, 20 and 21. Yorkshire won by an innings and six runs. In this match Yorkshire gave a trial to Farrar, of Brighouse, a promising batsman who had made some useful scores for the County’s second XI. Bat ting first on a good wicket, the visitors gave a very poor display. The only stand during the innings was made by Braund and Woods, who put on 57 for the fifth wicket in thirty-five minutes. Braund, who cut well and made some fine off-drives, batted for one hundred minutes and carried out his bat for 70 made out of 131 obtained whilst in. He hit nine 4’s. Rhodes and Rothery made 42 for Yorkshire’s first wicket in thirty-five minutes, and the former and Denton 131 for the second in an hour and a- quarter. The last-named played a bright game, scoring 77 out of 131 in seventy-five minutes and hitting thirteen 4’s. Rhodes, whose innings was a very fine one, was caught off the last ball of the day for 93, made out of 221 in two and a-half hours. He hit ten 4’s, and gave no chance. At the end of the day, Yorkshire, with seven wickets in hand, were 49 runs on. On Friday Hirst was out with five runs added, whilst at 260 Tunnicliffe was stumped for a very useful innings which included seven 4’s Wilkinson afterwards made a fine stand, adding 64 with Haisrh for the seventli wicket in forty miuutes, and 86 for the ninth with Hunter in seventy minutes. Haigh, who hit seven 4’s and a 5, and Myers were out to consecutive balls from Lewis. Wilkinson at times was very cautious, although he made his 79 in 125 minutes. The Somerset fielding during the innings was often poor, and Wilkinson was missed when 33, and Hunter when 17. The total reached 417, which gave the home side a lead of 245. In the remaining two hours and forty minutes left for play Somerset did far better than on the previous day, scoring 182 for the loss of only four wickets, and, when stumps were drawn, being only 63 behind with six wickets in hand. Martyn played a very sound game, and received very useful support, Johnson helping to make 10 for the first wicket in 20 miuutes, Lewis 71 for the second in an hour, and Braund 42 for the fourth in thirty minutes. On Saturday Martyn and Woods were quickly sent back, and, the last six wickets falling for 57, Yorkshire won by an innings and six runs Martyn drove very well indeed, and scored 75 out of 189 in 170 minutes. He gave no chance and hit eleven 4’s. Score and analysis:— S ombrsbt . First innings. II. Martyn, b Hirst ......... 4 P. R. Johnson, b Myers ...14 Lewis c Rhodes, b Myers... 17 F. A. Surrey took the field without Lord Dalmeny, Knox and Strudwick in this match, which was played for the benefit of John Devey, who had appeared for Warwickshire for 18 years. For the tenth time in succession the home side lost the toss, and were compelled to field whilst their opponents ran up a score of 562 in seven hours. Hayward and Hobbs opened in fine style, scoring 169 together for the first wicket in 115 minutes before being separated. They reached 50 in 40 minutes and 100 in 8'J. Hobbs, who reached 50 out of 76 in 65 minutes, and hit eleven 4’s, was first out for a chanceless 77, made out of 149 in 115 minutes. Hayes was sent back at 188 and Goatly at 191, whilst at 211 Hayward was adjudged lbw after batting for 165 minutes. His 109, which contained eight 4’s, was his eleventh hundred of the season, and, except for a difficult chance in the slips when 22, was chanceless. Craw ford batted 80 minutes for 43, and by the end of the day Surrey had scored 418 for eight wickets, Baker being 71 not out On Friday Baker continued to cut and drive in capital form, and, when the innings closed for 562, w bs left to carry out his bat for 155, made in 195 minutes out of 296. He hit sixteen 4’s, and, apart from a chance of stumping when 139, made no mistake. Vigar helped to put on 106 for the ninth wicket, and Smith 65 for the last. When Warwickshire went in Devey and Kinneir emulated the feat performed for Surrey by Hayward and Hobbs, scoring 132 together for the opening partner ship in 125 minutes. Kinneir, who was first out, played a very useful game, and hit seven 4’s. Devey, who had the satisfaction of making a hundred in his benefit match, scored 106 out of 200 by faultless cricket, in 225 minutes. He drove with great power and hit fourteen 4’s. When stumps were drawn for the day Warwickshire had scored 274 for four wickets. On Saturday Fishwick was sent back at 322, but following his dismissal came a long stand by Baker and Byrne for the sixth wicket, which resulted in 124 being added in 90 minutes. Byrne batted 100 minutes for his score of 62, obtaining his first 50 in 80 minutes. As at the Oval a fortnight before, Baker played a three-iiguro innings against the Surrey attack. He took 110 minutes to reach 50, but made his 106 out of 242 in 210 minutes. He hit a 5 and seven 4’s, and offered no chance When the last wicket fell, at 510, Surrey could claim an advan tage of only 52 on the first innings. Before the match concluded Surrey went in again and scored 159 for three wickets, Hayward batting an hour and a-half for 51. Score and analysis S urrey . First innings. LANCASHIRE v. SUSSEX. Played at Manchester on July, 19, 20 and 21. Lancashire won by 281 runs. After a poor opening, both the Spooners being out for 27, Tyldesley came in and played a fine innings. Chiefly owiug to him the third wicket added 96 in 70 minutes. He reached 50 in an hour and a-quarter, and, altogether, scored 70 out of 125in an hour and three-quarters. He drove and pulled well, and hit eight 4’s. After six wickets had fallen for 186, Sharp and Findlay added 85 for. the seventli in 45 minutes. Each played a vigorous game, and, curiously enough, hit a dozen 4Js and batted for an hour an.d three-quarters. Sharp scored 7&out of 148 obtained whilst in, and Findlay, who made 14 off an over from Cox, 81 out of 173. Dean helped the last-named to put on 58 for the ninth partnership in half an hour, and after lasting four hours the innings closed for 365. In the fifty minutes remaining for play, Sussex obtained 33 runs for the loss of Smith’s wicket. During the early hours of Friday morning rain fell, and, in consequence, the bowlers received some assistance when play was resumed. Killick played a capital innings, and, of the 64 added with Vine for the second wicket in eighty minutes, claimed 54. A. E. Relf afterwards helped Vine to put on 70 for the third wicket in fifty minutes ere the latter was sent back for 50, made out of 139 in 145 minutes, bimms and Dwyer alone reached double figures after the fourth wicket fell, and the innings closed for 204. Possessed of a lead of 161, Lancashire decided to go in again in preference to making Sussex follow-on. Neither of the Spooners nor Poidevin gave much trouble but, as in the first innings, Tyldesley and Sharp scored well, and added 56 for the fourth wicket. MugUston played a sound innings, and, by the end of the day, Lancashire had scored 211 for seven wickets in three hours, being then 402 runs on with three wickets in hand. On Saturday 36 more were added for the loss of a couple of wickets ere the innings was declared closed, Sussex being set the heavy task of obtaining 439 to win in five hours and a-half. Smith again failed to reach double figures, although he was in for fifty minutes, and, by lunch time, four wickets were down for 75. Vine scored 32 out of 60 in eighty minutes, playing as it proved, the highest innings on the side. Simms again made a useful score, and, although Cox and the Relfs exceeded twenty, the innings closed for 157, leaving Lancashire victorious by 281 runs. Cuttell who was never mastered, took six wickets for 57. Score and analysis:— L ancashire . First innings. R. II. Spooner, c Smith, b Dwyer...............................14 A. F.
