284 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME J u l y 19, 1906. cut and drove well, and, in all, batted for an hour and five minutes. Against a total of 240, the home side lost Tarrant and Beldam for 37, but Challenor and Warner added 44 for the third wicket in half- an-hour. Still, six wickets were down for 89 when Veal went in, and assisted Warner in adding 80 for the seventh wicket in forty-five minutes. The last- named, who was missed when 33, was undefeated at the close of the day, when the home side, with three wickets in hand, were 54 runs behind. On Tuesday Warner and Weigall continued their innings and, altogether, put on 75 for the eighth wicket in fifty minutes, the rival score being passed whilst they were in. Both were sent back at the same total, Warner, who hit ten 4’s and made 87 out of 207 in onehundred and forty-fiveminutes,bcingoutto avery finecatch in the slips. Young and Headlam quickly added 25 for the last wicket, before the latter was disposed of by a magnificent one-handed catch in the slips by Goodman. The innings closed for 269, and Smith, who took five wickets for 78, again showed how valuable a man he is to the side. The visitors opened their second innings in promising form, Bancroft and Challenor mak ing 35 for the first wicket and the former and Constantine 20 for the second. The total was taken to 73 before Smith was third out, and with his dismissal lunch was taken. After the interval only 1run had been added before Bancroft, who had played a steady innings, was ad judged lbw. About this timeVogler was proving very deadly in his attack, and disposed of Austin,Ollivierre, Cumberbatch and Learmond in quick succession. Mainly by his efforts the innings, after lasting a couple of hours, closed for 115. Voglcr took nine wickets for 94, his analysis after lunch being seven overs, 18 runs and six wickets. The M.C.C. were set 87 to win, and lost four wickets in the task. Score and analysis: — W est I ndians . First innings. G. Challenor, c & b Vogler 59 C. K. Played at Portsmouth on July 16, 17 and 18. Sussex won by an innings and 9 runs. The opening play in this match was by no means Jessopiau in character, seeing that Vine, who was first out at 45, batted for seventy minutes for 19, and that Smith was in a couple of hours for 41. When Cox was bowled half the wickets were down for 141, but then the elder Relf found two splendid partners in Leach and Simms. With the former he added 131 for the sixth wicket in an hour, and with the latter 166 for the seventh in seventy minutes. Leach hit a 5 and eight 4’s and lessened the sting of the Hampshire attack considerably. Simms, who was missed when 34, scored 88 out of 166 in seventy minutes, and hit sixteen 4’s. The batting of A. E. Keif was quite the feature of the day’s cricket. He reached his 100 in a couple of hours, and, when stumps were drawn with the score 461 for nine wickets, was 174 notout. Apart from a chance when 134 to Jephson at mid-off, he made no mistake. On Tuesday the last wicket added 28 before Butt was disposed of, the innings closing for 489, made in six houra. A. E. Relf remained unbeaten with 189 to his name, a score which contained a 6 and nineteen 4’s and took four hours to make. He was missed when 134, and made some risky strokes after reach ing three figures, but played a very .fine innings. Hampshire, upon a good wicket, gave a very sorry exhibition, Dwyer and the elder Keif bowling with great success. Greig was out at 2, but Bowell and Mead put on 43 for the second wicket in 70 minutes, and Llewellyn and Sprot 54 for the fourth in thirty-five. Very little further resistance was made, and, the last five wickets going down for 31, the innings closed for 155, made in three hours. Upon following-on 334 behind, Greig was again soon sent back, being bowled by Dwyer at 3. Hill and Mead then added 53 for the second wicket in sixty-five minutes, after which the former and Bowell succeeded in keeping their wickets intact until play ceased for the day. Hill gave a brilliant display, reaching 50 out of 69 in an hour and-a- quarter, and, when stumps were drawn, claiming 83 of the 118 made bv the side. Yesterday morning Hampshire lost Bowell, Hill and Sprot with only 14 added. The old Cambridge Blue batted 150 minutes for his 91, included in which were twelve 4’s. When it appeared possible that the whole side would be cheaply dismissed, a fine stand was effected by Llewellyn and Jephson, who put on 117 runs for the sixth wicket ere the former was caught for a fault less innings of 91. Jephson played a very service able game, and Stone made a few good hits, but, the last wicket falling at 325, Sussex were left victorious by an innings and 9 runs. Score and analysis S ussex . O. Yorkshire won by ten wickets. Owing to rain no play was possible on the first day. On Tuesday the weather was fine and warm, and Derbyshire went in on a wicket which was soft on top. Wright was sent back at 17 and Cad man at 22, but Needham and Ashcroft then added 47 in forty minutes for the third wicket, bringing about a change in the bowling. Then a collapse occurred, and six wickets at one period fell for 19 runs, but Bestwick and Morton, by adding 25 for the last wicket, took the total to 113, made in two hours. Haigh took three wickets for 19, and Myers three for 25. For a time it looked as though Yorkshire would fare almost as badly as the visitors had done, for, although the first wicket realised 21 and the second 30 (in a quarter-of-an-hour) five wickets were down for 76. Wilkinson, however, helped Hirst to put on 25 for the sixth wicket, whilst with Myers, who made only 6, 23 were added for the seventh. Hirst was playing a very great game, his pulling being very fine indeed. He found two excellent partners in Ilaigh and Hunter, adding 73 for the eighth wicket in fifty-five minutes with the former, and 37 for the ninth in twenty-five minutes with the latter. Haigli hit eight 4’s in his 39, whilst Hunter punished Ash croft for 13 in an over. When the last wicket fell, Hirst was left to carry out his bat for a most valuable and faultless innings of 89,which contained a dozen 4’s and took one hundred and sixty minutes to compile. In the twenty-five minutes left for play, Derbyshire lost Wright and Cadman for 17 runs, and, when stumps were drawn for the day, were 109 runs behind with eight wickets in hand. Yesterday only 34 had been added to the over-night score before Ashcroft was caught in the slips, whilst at 69 both Needham and Purdy were sent back by Haigh with consecutive balls. Needham played a very fine game, but was missed by Tunnicliffe when he had made 34. Later, Warren and Humphries added 34, and the innings closed for 134, leaving Yorkshire only 9 runs to win—a task they accomplished with out loss in a-quarter of an hour.
