Cricket 1906
274 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J uly 19, 1906. accident to Blythe however, which gave him the opportunity for which he might otherwise have had to wait a little. Of him it may fairly be said that he “ took occasion by the forward top.” His opening match was sufficient to prove his value to the side beyond a doubt. Though just at thffmoment he is standing down owing to a slight injury, he has earned his place as a permanent member of the Kent Eleven. His record since he made his entry into first-class matches will be thoroughly familiar to Cricket readers, and hardly requires detailed reference. His pluck and resource at the finish of the exciting match between Surrey and Kent at the Oval certainly had a great deal to do with Kent’s success, the one defeat Surrey has suffered so far this season in the County Champion ship. His coolness under the trying conditions on that occasion showed, at least, that he possessed the right cricket temperament. His physique at present hardly suggests a capacity to stand the continuous strain of strenuous cricket. With increased strength and care, how ever, he is certain to develop his natural ability, and as he is, in addition to his merits as a batsman and a bowler, a thoroughly good field, Kent may b<) considered fortunate in having produced one of the most likely all-round young cricketers of the year. In bowling, his delivery very much resembles that of Blythe. While very deceptive both in flight andpace, his best ball is that which comes in to the bats man. Standing six feet high he has every advantage of reach. His strokes show a great variety, but the most effective is his off-drive by cover-point. The phenomenal scoring of K. L. Hutchings at Tonbridge School in the earlypart of the present decadewarranted a confident belief that he would make his mark in first-class cricket if the chance came. His three years at Ton bridge School found him iu a remark able run-getting vein with averages of 57 in 1900; 47 in 1901 and 63 in 1902. In his last year at school he played in one match for Kent, scoring eleven in his two innings. He was one of the Kent Eleven which visited the United States in 1903, but excepting in that tour, when he took pirt in elevenmatches, his appearances for Kent previous to this year have been rare. Since he came into the side last month he has not been able to do wrong. His first four innings realised an aggregate of 403 for twice out, and all round his batdug was of such a high order as to thoroughly warrant his selection to represent the Gentlemen against the Players. His brother, W. E. C., who represented Kent in 1899, played for Worcestershire last season, and it is said that K. L. has also a qualification for the latter. His family ties, however, are in Kent, and there is every reason to believe tnat circumstances will allow him to play pretty frequently for it. He is a tiue upstanding bat with plenty of strokes all round the wicket, and some of the bsst judges in Kent even think that he is, in some respects, better than B. H. 'Year. Batted in. Inn. N. O. He can bowl, too, as a change, and is good in the field, being a sure catch. His innings for Kent have been as follows :— t Signifies American tour. The 106 was a chanceless innings, v.
