22 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. F eb . 22, 1906. INTER-STATE CRICKET. VICTORIA v. NEW SOUTH WALES. AN INNINGS OF 281 BY M. A. NOBLE. Played at Melbourne on December 23, 26, 27 and 28. New South Wales won by an innings and 253 runs. Perhaps the most notable point in this match was not so much the batting of Mackay and Noble as the failure of Armstrong and Laver with the ball. These two men, who were the mainstay of the Australian team in bowling last year, could only take three wickets between them for 309 runs. There must be a general impression in Australia that there are no really great bowlers in the country at the present time. Mackay’s innings of 194 whs almost perfect and his runs were made in the short space of three hours and 40 minutes ; he hit 26 4’s. Noble’s 281 runs were put together in a little over six hours and his hits included 21 4’s. The partnership between Noble and Mackay produced 268 runs and that between Noble and C. Gregory 225. runs. Cotter hit with great power, scoring his 68 in 35 minutes, among his hits being two 6’s and seven 4’s. In the first innings of Victoria the 300 was put up when only two men were out, but the next eight wickets fell for 67 runs. In the second innings, with the wicket still in good order, six wickets fell for 65 runs. It will be noticed that, of the eight N.S.W. men who were in the Australian team of 1905, Noble and Cotter alone represented their State in this match. Trumper and Duff were kept away by business, Kelly has given up the game and, apparently, Hopkins, S.E. Gregory and Howell were not chosen to play. V ictoria . First innings. In this match Claxton’s innings of 199 not out stood out very prominently above all others. He was at the wickets for about six hours, and hit twenty-two 4’s, C. E. Doiling appeared in interstate cricket for the first time, and made a favourable impression by his innings of 30. One of themost noticeable points about the match was the bowling of A. Wright, who in the first innings of Victoria took seven wickets for 64 runs. He is described as right hand with an easy action, and he varies his pace from slow to medium. He is also said to break both ways, although his best ball is supposed to turn from the leg. The match was spoiled by the weather, a very heavy thunderstorm on the Saturday making the wicket difficult on the Monday. S outh A ustralia . First innings. F. T. TWO SEPARATE HUNDREDS BY MACKAY. Played at Sydney on January 6, 8, 9 and 10. New South Wales won by nine wickets. On the second day of this match (a Mon day) rain fell all through the morning, and play was not resumed until three o’clock. Dolling played very fine cricket for 83 not out in the second innings of South Australia, when all his companions, except Hack, were failing. New South Wales had to make 177 to win, and thanks largely to a brilliant dis play by Mackay, the runs were quickly hit off, for the loss of Trumper’s wicket. S outh A ustralia . First innings F. T.
