Cricket 1906

270 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J uly 12, 1906. SOUTH WALES v. WEST INDIANS. Played at Cardiff on July 9 and 10. West Indians won by 278 runs. Although they last their first four wickets for 23, the tourists played a first in n iD gs of 324. For this good score they were chiefly indebted to Smith, who, hitting fifteen 4’s, scored 140 not out in one hundred and forty-five minutes. With Constantine headded 126 for the fifth wicket in sixty-five minutes, and with Ollivierre 110 for the sixth in seventy minutes. South Wales found run-getting no easy matter, Riches batting fifty-five minutes for 18, and Diver half-an-hour for 11 not out. At the end of the day the home side had lost six wickets for 93. On the next morning the innings closed for 102, Smith following up his capital innings by taking five wickets for 28. In their second innings the visitors played a free game, and, although they made only 176, they set their opponents 399 to win. At no time did there ever appear the slightest possibility of the runs being obtained, both Cumberbatch and Smith bowling in fine form. Thackeray hit well, and batted only thirty-five minutes for his score of 59, included in which were nine 4’s. Smith’s all-round cricket was quite the feature of the match. The West Indians won by 278 runs. Score and analysis:— W est I n dian s . First innings. Second innings. G. Challenor, c Bancroft, b Steeples ........................20 st Diver, b Crcber 24 O. K.
