LIVERPOOL AND DISTRICT v. CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY. Played at Aigburth on July 9, 10 and 11. Cambridge University won by 72 runs. Except that Weaver and Mugliston displaced Napier and Colbeck, the Cambridge side was identical with that which beat Oxford at Lord’s the previous week. After the visitors had lost half their wic.kets for 122, Young and Mugliston put on 221 together for the sixth wicket in one hundred and ten minutes. Young, who made no mistake, batted one hundred and fifteen minutes and hit nineteen 4’s, whilst Mugliston, who might have been caught and bowled when 95, made seventeen 4’s. The innings closed for 421, made in two hundred and twenty-five’minutes. Before play ceased Liverpool lost five wickets for 91, Graham, who batted for an hour, being not out 51. On the second day no play was possible until twenty minutes past two, owing to rain. Thanks chiefly to Graham and Barnes, who hit thirteen and fifteen 4’s respectively, the home side took their total to 285, which was certainly a larger one than appeared probable over-night. The University, when they went in the second time, collapsed rather badly, the order of going-in being changed, and, when play ended for the day, had lost eight wickets for 128. Payne made some good hits, but nobody else appeared at all at home with the bowling. C am bridge U niversity . First innings. M. W. Payne, lbw, b Mason 39 C. H.
