Hampshire won by five wickets. The visitors opened well in this match at Taunton last week, sending back Martyn, Braund and Lewis for 41, but Hardy and Phillips afterwards scored well, and, in the end, the total reached 284. Phillips, who made many hard drives and fine cuts, batted two hours and five minutes for his 104 not out, and, with Woods, put on 65 for the sixth wicket in twenty-five minutes. He was missed when 84, but nevertheless played a most praiseworthy innings. Ere play ceased for the day Hampshire had scored 75 for the loss of Bowell, Greig and Mead. On Friday Ll^jrellyn and Jephson put on 110 for the fourth wiciet in 85 minutes, the latter playing a chanceless innings. Llewellyn batted 135 minutes for his 98, and hit thirteen 4’s —five of them off an over sent down by Phillips. He was missed when 56 by Braund in the slips, but it was a difficult catch. Bacon afterwards hit pluckily, and with Stone put on 86 for the seventh wicket; he was missed when 52, and hit nine 4’s. The innings realised 314, which f ave Hampshire a lead of 30. When stumps were rawn Somerset were 80 runs on with four wickets in hand. On Saturday Woods and Oranfield quickly got out, and the innings closed for 134, made in two hours and a half. Requiring only 105 to win, on a perfect wicket, Hampshire made 34 before a wicket fell, but by lunch time had four men out for 75. The runs were eventually made for the loss of another wicket, Hampshire winning by a quarter to three by five wickets. Score and analysis S omerset . H.
