Cricket 1906
J uly 12, 1906. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 261 generally questioned. Bird, the captain, assisted Wright to add 60 for the seventh wicket in an hour, although he scored only a dozen himself. Wright, when apparently set for his hundred, was caught by Buchanan off May for a most serviceable innings of 79, which contained fourteen 4’s, the majority of them drives. Before he had made a run he was bowled by Napier by a no-ball, which went to the boundary. He reached 50 in an hour and a-quarter, and obtained four 4’s off an over from Branston. His defence was strong, but he also hit well when opportunity offered. There was an unexpected stand at the conclusion of the innings, Curwen and Martin actually putting on 90 for the last wicket in 55 minutes, Martin, who hit hard and often, making 56 of the number. The innings realised 327, which was decidedly good against the Cambridge attack, especially as half the wickets were down for 130. That the better side won, there canbe no reasonable doubt whatever. W. M. Payne kept wicket splendidly, and dismissed seven men, and will, altogether, have good cause to remember the game. Eleven hundred and twenty- two runs were made for 36 wickets in the match, which Cambridge won by 94 runs. {Score and analysis:— C am bridge . First innings. Second innings. M. W. YORKSHIRE v. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE Played at Dewsbury on July 5 and 6. DEFEAT OF YORKSH IRE. Notts won by 25 runs. The visitors made a deplorable start in this match, Jones being dismissed by Hirst’s second ball, George Gunn by his fifth, and J. Iremonger by his seventh, three wickets going down for8 runs. John Gunn and Hardstaff added 54 for the fourth wicket in 45 minutes, but the last six yielded but a dozen more, Haigh sending back three men for 2 runs in ten balls. The total amounted to 74 only, Hirst taking seven wickets for 27. Yorkshire lost Rhodes at 25, and both Rothery and Tunnicliffe 12 later. Myers hit well, but eight wickets were down for 99 when Hunter went in, and, with Myers, helped to add 51 for the ninth in 45 minutes. John Gunn took seven wickets for 86 in the innings, which amounted to 151. Deyes, whilst batting, was injured on the knee, and was prevented from bowling in the second innings of the visitors. In the 50 minutes remaining for play Jones and J. Iremonger scored 75 together without being separated, and, when play ceased, Notts, with all their wickets in hand, were only two runs behind. On the following morning,on a wicket affected by rain, Jones played a splendid innings, scoring 88 out of 135 in 125 minutes without a mistake. He hit eleven 4’s, and, with J. Iremonger, made 79 for the first wicket. The last eight wickets fell for 35, and, the innings closing for 170,Yorkshire were set but 94 to win. Hirst again proved very deadly with the ball, and in the whole match took fourteen wickets for 97. It was generally thought that Yorkshire would obtain the runs, but Rothery was out at 8, Denton, Rhodes and Tunnicliffe at 21, and Wilkinson, Hirst, Taylor and Myers at 26, eight wickets then being down. Haigh saved the side from disgrace, and with Hunter added 21 for the ninth wicket and with Deyes 21 for the last. All were out for 65, Notts winning by 25 runs. Hallam and Wass bowled admirably, and thoroughly deserved their success. Score and analysis N otts . First Innings. A. O.
