Cricket 1906
250 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD Of* TliE GAMtl. J uly 5, 1906. first knock, declared with the total at 249 for eight wickets and then got two Shirbumians out for 79. When the game ceased Sherborne were just a hun dred behind with eight wickets in hand, so that things looked fair for them. The highest individual innings of the match was the 58 for Tonbridge by L. A. Shuter, who is, by the way, a son of L. A. Shuter, who played for Surrey in the later seventies and early eighties. H. G May, the Sherborne captain, is in the fore front of school wicket-keepers, and of such exceptional promise as to lead one to hope that he will make a name in higher cricket. T h e Charterhouse and Westminster match gave C. V. L. Hooman, who is the Charterhouse captain this summer, the opportunity of which he has availed himself so fully the last three seasons. This time he just failed to repeat the hundred he got in 1904 and 1905, being the last out when but four short of three figures. Westminster bowlers have, indeed, good reason to remember him, as he scored 166 in 1904 .and 139 in 1905, which, with his 96 last week, make his aggregate 391 for the three years. The most noteworthy feature of the match was his stand with L. R. Burrows at the end of Charterhouse’s first innings. The latter’s 42 not out cannot be too highly praised, as he came in when runs were badly needed, and helped to add over a hundred for the tenth wicket. The Westminster captain, P. T. Rawlings, who got 24 and 50, the latter a particu larly good display, played for the Young Amateurs of Surrey last year, and is of distinct promise. T he match between the Gentlemen and Players, which commences at Lord’s on Monday, it will interest all readers of “ Gossip” to know, will mark the one hundredth anniversary of the first meet ings of the two sides—on Lord’s first Ground, in July, 1806. Capital sides have been selected, and a good game should result. L o r d D a lm e n y and J. E. Raphael got the thirty runs Surrey wanted to win at Chesterfield on Tuesday night in four minutes and a half. Bestwick and Rickman, who each had one over, suf fered to the extent of thirteen and seven teen runs respectively. HAMPSTEAD v. ELTHAM.—Played at Eltham on June 30. HlMrSTEAD. F.R.D.
