Since 1838 the Inter-University match has been played annually without a break. Previous to this the Universities had met three times—in 1827, 1829 and 1836. In each case Oxford had shown a marked superiority, although the first game, which was at Lord’s, was apparently limited to one day, and only an innings was completed, with an advantage of 166 runs to Oxford. (Photo of St. Andrews, who was as successful in the Schools as he was in all sorts of games, had no doubt a good deal to do with originating the match— “ That Grey Bishop ; he who played So gallantly in ’27.” A cricketer of many parts, his bowl ing was mainly responsible for the great advantage Oxford were able to get in this opening match. Seven of the ten Cambridge wickets, indeed, fell to his arm, and the one batsman to offer any resistance apparently was that most versatile of players Herbert Jenner, a name to conjure with in years to come, whose 47 was the only double in Cam r. c. h. e y re (Cambridge). by Messrs. Therewas no match in 1828, and, though Oxford won under Charles Wordsworth’s captaincy in 1829, the Captain himself did not play a con spicuous part, failing to score in either innings, and doing little with the ball. This match of 1829, by the way, was played at Oxford, as were those of 1843, 1846, 1848 and 1850—no doubt for good reasons. Seven years elapsed before the Universi ties metj for the third time, and then Lord’s was again the battlefield. With the exception of 1837, which was a blank year, and the four matches above men tioned, the Oxford and Cambridge fixture
