Cricket 1906

234 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD 0£ THE GAME. J une 28, 1§06. rung. Some of Constantine’s shots were very good, particularly his forcing stroke in front of cover-point. T h e dinner at the Oral, at which the two teams with a few members of the S.C.C.C. foregathered on Monday night, was invested with additional importance from the pres-nee of several leading "West Indian personalities. Sir Cavendish Boyle, K.C.M.G., now Govenor of Mauritius, and previously Colonial Secre tary of Bermuda and Goverment S9cre- tary of British Guiana, proposed the toast of the Surrey County C.C., and Sir A. W. L. Hemming, G.C.M.G., ex- Governor of British Guiana, and subse quently of Jamaica, the Visitors. The Orient was also well represented by the Nestor of Parsi cricket, Mr. J. M. Framjee Patel, who made a rousing speech, emphasising the Imperial side of cricket with a vigour which would have glad dened the heart of Mr. P. P. Warner. Captain Wynyard’s references to the cordial relations between M.C.C. and the Surrey County C.C., as well as to his own personal associations with the Club and Surrey cricketers, struck a particularly happy note, and gave an appropriate finish to a very enjoyable function. T h a t the veterans are not lagging superfluous on the stage has been forcibly Bhown several times already this season, notably by “ The Master” and Captain W. McCanlis. The hand of another veteran has evidently not lost its cunning, to judge by a performance of the Hon. J. S. Udal, the old Incog.. In a match recently at Antigua, where he is now Chief Justice, he took four wickets in four successive balls with his lobs. He does not mind giving himself away with the admission that he is only six months the junior of W. G. D u b in q the past few days the follow ing scores of 200 or more have come under my notice:—208 not out by E. Eogers, for Southgate v. M.C.C. and Ground, at Southgate, on June 23rd; 202 by H. D. Harben, for Gentlemen of Worcestershire v. Gentlemen of Stafford shire, at Worcester, on June 25th and 26th ; 201 not out by Lieut. Majendie, for United Services v. South Devon, at Devonpoit, on June 23rd; and 200 not out by N. C. Jacks, for Eichmond v. Norwood, at Norwood, on June 22nd. O n Monday last Captain W. L. Poster scored 127, F. E. E. Brooke 124, and W. N. Turner 133 not out for E.H.A. v. Band of Brothers, at Woolwich. The innings of the E H.A. was declared closed with the score 442 for four wickets. I went in to bat, But the hall hit my pad, sir; W ith heart pit-a-pat I went in to hat, But they shouted, “ H ow ’ s that f ” And I did feel so mad, sir; I went in to bat, But the ball hit my pad, sir. — Vanity Fair.
