The home side gave only a moderate display in their first innings. Farmer and Veal were out for 26, but, although B. S. Foster and Newstead added 55 together for the third wicket in half-an-hour, seven were down by the time thescorewas 110. It was at this critical point that Humphries, the Derbyshire wicket-keeper, went in, and proved himself the man for the occasion. Of the 96 runs made whilst he was in he claimed 53, made in eighty-five minutes. With Young he added 47 for the last wicket in twenty-five minutes, and an idea of his play can be f athered from the fact that he hit as many as eleven 's in his 53. The County, ere play ceased, lost six wickets for 184, Arnold being not out 52. Bowley, who assisted H. K. Foster to add 48 for the second wicket in forty-five minutes, batted an hour and a- hour for 53, an innings which contained some very pretty strokes to leg. On Friday Arnold succeeded in reaching three figures, although, when the ninth wicket fell, he had made only 59. He made 101 out of 146 in 115minutes without giving a chance. He hit eleven 4’s, and, with Wilson, added 56 for the last wicket in half an hour. There was some very bright cricket when M.C.O. went in the second time, the freest display being by Vogler, who made 85 in an hour and a-quarter, and brought off several big hits. He was almost caught in the long-field by Burns when he had made 5, but survived to hit fifteen 4’s. With Humphries he put on 68 for the fifth wicket in forty-five minutes. Farmer batted an hour and three-quarters for 55, and with B. S. Foster added 55 in forty minutes. Cuffe bowled excellently, and obtained seven wickets for 91 in an innings of 304. Arnold, it will be seen, sent down only 11 overs. The county were set 263 to win, and, thanks to Bowley and Pearson, who made 96 together for the first wicket, had scored 100with only one man out by the time stumps were drawn. On the last day Pearson was sent back ere another run had been made, but Cuffe and H. K. Foster practically put the result beyond doubt by adding 90 for the third wicket in seventy minutes. Cuffe batted 105 minutes for 56, reaching 50 in eighty-five, and made no mistake. Worcestershire won by five wickets. Score and analysis:— M.O.O. and G round . First innings. Second innings. Capt. C.
