SOMERSET v. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. Played at Bath on June 14, 15 and 16. Abandoned. Barnett and Wrathall, who hit ten 4’s, made 71 together for the visitors’ first wicket, the latter being then sent back 47. Barnett, who played well on the leg-side and hit five 4’s, scored 56 in an hour and a-half. Some bright cricket was seen whilst Jessop and Board were together, the two adding 85 for the fourth wicket in 40 minutes. Jeesop commenced slowly, being in 25 minutes for his first 14 runs, but he afterwards added 66 in half-an-hour. He gave no chance whilst in, and hit twO 6’s (off Braund and Bailey) and eleven 4’s. Huggins afterwards hit well for 41, but he was missed when 7—the only mistake made by Somerset in the field during the day The innings closed for 329, made in 220 minutes, and in the 70 minutes remaining Somerset scored 92 for the three wickets in response, Martyn being not out with 40 to his credit. A few showers prevented a resumption being made at the usual houron Friday. Martyn and I/ewis continued together until the stand for the fourth wicket had realised 130 in an hour and 40 minutes. Martyn, who was missed when 40, batted 155 minutes, and, in the over in which he was dismissed, scored 4, 2 and 6 off the first three balls and was caught off the fourth. Altogether, he hit a 6 and eleven 4’s. Lewis batted 115 minutes without a mistake, and hit thirteen 4’s : he made some excellent drives. The concluding part of the innings was brightened by some fin® hitting by Maxwell, who put on 87 for the ninth wicket in an hour with Hardy, after the latter and Lee had added 52 for the eighth in 40 minutes. Robinson made four catches at the. wicket during the innings, but also missed four. On Saturday Gloucestershire lost Barnett at 14 and Robinson at 25, and Wrathall would have been sent back but for being missed. Jessop again hit well, scoring 66 out of 81 in 35 minutes, and reaching 50 in 25. He made two 6’s and eight 4’s, and off four balls from Robson made 18. He scored off twenty-five of the thirty- seven balls he received, and gave no chance. Thomas and Huggins, as in the first innings, made useful scores, and were still together when, with Gloucestershire 176 ahead and four wickets to fall, the game was abandoned owing to rain.
