THE FINEST BAT THE WORLD PRODUCES J u n e 21, 1906, CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 211 BUSSEY’S AT THE SIGN OF THE WICKET. B y F . S. A shlst -O oopbb . Those who were present at the Oval on Friday last were fortunate enough to witness the finest finish seen during the present sea son. The match was one of which the honours were by no means monopolised by the victorious side: it would, in fact, be difficult, if not impossible, to imagine a team playing a finer up-hill game than Surrey did on the second day. That a splendid struggle should have taken place was only appropriate, seeing that it was the fiftieth match played at the Oval between the two counties. Close finishes have often been witnessed in Kent v. Surrey matches : thus, in 1847, and again in 1905, a tie had to be chronicled, whilst on the Artillery Ground as far back as 1750 Kent, as was the case last week, proved successful by a single wicket only. That 1750 game was an interesting one, inasmuch as it was the third, and deciding, one between the two sides. Each of the three matches was com pleted in a day, as many as 39 wickets falling in the last. In 1906 Kent required 19 runs to win when the last man went in : in 1750 the number was five. So far as is known, as many as 115 games have now been played between the two sides, as follows : BUSSEY’S Ground. First Mtch. Kent. Surrey.Dwn. Ttl. In addition to the above, Kent playel Surrey at Finsbury in 1746, but the result was not recorded in the newspapers. Long may these two old cricketing rivals continue to struggle for supremacy on “ the tented field ” ! A correspondent writes respecting the number of partnerships for the first wicket in which “ W . G .” has assisted in first-class matches, the query doubtless being prompted by the Master’s recent stand with Alan Mar shal at Fenner’s. It will probably interest many besides the one who requested the in formation to learn that “ W . G .” has now helped to put up 100 or more for the opening partnership no less than sixty-six times. From the foUowing summary it will be seen that his stand of 146 occupies the twenty-third place in the list:— Runs. Year. 283, W. G. (180) and B. B. Cooper (101), Gents of South v.
