Cricket 1906
J an . 25, 1906. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 15 Cooper, Mr. W. A. Bettesworth, Mr. A. L. Fotd and the Rev. R. S. Holmes for kindly- correcting matter of detail. By way of preface it should be mentioned that most of the books are, for the purpose of easy reference, tabulated under two headings —Authors and Titles—but particulars are given once only ; generally following the author’s name. Periodicals devoting much of their space to the game, but not exclusively identified with it, are not noticed, unless under exceptional circumstances; such are The Cricket and Football Times , Cricket and Athletic Gazette , Cricket and Football Journal , etc. Nor have I deemed it advisable to include any volume on sports generally, unless cricket predominates in it ; while any attempt to tabulate the numerous club reports issued in book form would prove futile. In dealing with books published by w’ell-known cricketers relating to their school days, one scarcely knows where to commence and where to finish, but it is generally admitted that such works as Pycroft’s Oxford Memories , Lubbock’s Memories of Eton and Etonians , etc., deserve recognition in a list of books devoted to the King of Games. A.B.C. of Cricket. (See Fielding, Hugh.) Abel (Robert). (See “ Cricket of.” ) Abel (Robert). Cricket and How to Play it. The Champion Handbook Series. (Dean and Sons, London.) 6d. and Is. [Issued in connection with Grand Bazaar held October, 1888, in aid of the funds of the above club. As a souvenir of the Aberdeenshire Club, this book is valuable, and copies are exceedingly difficult to meet with. Probably worth one guinea.] About a Cricket Ball. (See Craig, A.) A Collection of all Grand Matches played in England within Twenty Years, 1771- 1791. W. Epps, Troytown, Rochester, 1799. [Many important matches are omitted from this publication, which, however, is a gem to collectors. Mr. Haygarth informed Mr. Ashley-Cooper that, but for this book, vol. 1of Cricket Scores and b-oyraphits would not have been nearly as complete as it is. It was almost at the last moment, and quite by accident, that Mr. Haygarth obtained a copy of this work. Worth at least from 2()s. to 30s.] Adventures of a Cricket Ball. By an Old Boy. [Although difficult to meet with this book is not so valuable as many imagine, 10s. being quite as much as it is worth. 1 have three copies, each, curiously enough, printed and issued by different publishers, namely: J. M. Sweet & Co., Newcastle, N.S.W.; A. B. Rae, Bathurst; and Jarrett & Co., Sydney. A supplementary edition, giving full scores of the final engagements of the tour was issued gratis to sub scribers of the original edition.] Articles of the Game of Cricket, as settled at the “ Star and Garter.” Folding plate. 6d. J. Williams, London. 1774. Another issue entitled the “ New Articles of the Game of Cricket.” Undated. [Beyond a slight resemblance in the wording of the title there is no comparison between these two books, and the generally expressed opinion is that they are not two editions but two distinct works. The frontispiece plate differs in each and, curiously enough, the “ New Articles” appear to be older. Both pamphlets are now of intrinsic value, and are worth what they will fetch. A copy was sold by auction a few years back and realised 50s.] Ashley-Cooper (F. S.) Cricket, 1742-1751. Printed for private circulation and limited to fifteen copies.
