M.C.C. won by 4 wickets. On the first day Nourse, who played so well in the first Test match at Johanesburg, scored 119 by very sound cricket. It will be noticed from the score that no one else on the side made more than 25, and that eight men could only put up 23 between them. The M.C.C. had lost a wicket for 44 when stumps were drawn. On the next morning they did not do so well, and the South Africans, who had a lead of 15 on the fiist innings, lost five wickets in their second for 126. On the third day the M.C.C. had to fight hard for their runs, but although their first four wickets fell for 38, they managed to pull off the match thanks to fine cricket by F. L. Fane and Haigh. Bv A lfred D. T a ylo r . “ Of making many books there is no end.” — Ecclesiastes xii.. 12. <« ’ I ntroduction . To the large army of collectors of cricket literature the want of a guide to the numerous publications which have been issued in con nection with the game has for a long time b^en a serious drawback, and it is with the aim of supplying this want that the present articles are published. Ten years ago, my townsman, Mr. A. J. Gaston, produced his Bibliography of Cricket , but as the edition was limited to twenty-five copies it is apparent that the publication was intended for the exclusive use of the small circle of friends who assisted*the author in itsprepara tion, and that it is consequently beyond the reach of the ordinary collector. My original intention was to refer briefly to each publi cation, but in deference to the known wishes of collectors I have endeavoured to give some idea of the present market value of the rarer books. In collating material for the subject I had anticipated valuable assistance from the many collectors of cricketana, but in this direction I was sadly disappointed, though I have to thank Mr. E. B. Ross, Mr. G. L. Garnsey, Mr. F. F. Kelly, Mr. J. B. Payne, Mr. F. A. Brooke and Mr. R. W. Hedley for additions, and especially Mr. F. S. Ashley-
