THE FIRST MATCH AGAINST THE TRANSVAAL ( six t h of t h e t o u r .) Played at Johannesburgh on December 26, 27 and 28. Transvaal won by 60 runs. There were some curious ups and downs in this match. In their first innings Transvaal lost four wickets for 30 runs, and the M.C.C., thanks largely to a splendid innings by Denton, had a lead of 130. Shalders batted for three hours for his 66 in the Transvaal second innings, but when six wickets were down the side was only 58 runs on. Faulkner then played a fine game, and as he received efficient help, the M.C.C. had to make 175 in the fourth innings of the match, but at no time did they seem like winning. They missed several catchcs in the Transvaal second innings. T ransvaal . First innings. L. J. Tancred, st Board, b. Blythe............................... 5 W. A. THE FIRST TEST MATCH. EIGHTH OF THE TOUR. Played at Johannesburg on January 2, 3 & 4. South Africa won by one wicket. On the first day of the match the English men had so much the best of the game that when stumps were drawn they were well on the road to victory, for although they only scored 184, they dismissed eight of their opponents for 71. Rain fell in the night, and on the next day Warner and Crawford played fine cricket, and the South Africans had to make 284 to win. Of these they scored 68 for two wickets before stumps were drawn. The third wicket fell without addition to the total, the fourth at 81, the fifth at 89, and the sixth at 105, so that the game seemed practically over. But White and Nourse played a great game, and before they were separated their partnership pro duced 121 runs, White being bowled at 226 for 8 1 , which he had put together in about four hours by perfect cricket. When the last man joined Nourse 45 runs were still required, but the runs were made amidst the greatest enthusiasm, Sherwell having played very well indeed for 22 at a most critical time. Nourse, whose innings of 93 cannot be too highly praised, carried his bat; he was at the wickets for about three hours and three- quarters. M. C. C. First innings. P. F.
