Cricket 1906
12 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J an . 25, 1906. I n afew days John Wisden’s Cricketers’ Notebook for 1906 will make its appear ance, edited, as before, by Mr. F. S. Ashley-Cooper. The Notebook seems to gain in popular favour every year. T he annual dinner of the Streatham Cricket Club will be held on Wednesday, February 14tb, at the Cafe Monico, Mr. Samuel T. Fisher in the chair. All members past and present, and their friends, will be cordially welcomed. For tickets apply to the honorary secretary, Mr. H . H. Scott, Wocdfield Avenue, Streatham, S.W. H abry T rott , the old Australian cap tain, who is not playing inPennant cricket this season at Melbourne, made 62 on December 14 for Bendigo against an eleven of Victoria, which included Arm strong. In the course of his inniDgs Trott hit Armstrong out of the ground to square-leg. A noticeable point about the match was that Bendigo, having a lead of 33 on their first innings, declared in the second at 57 in order to see Armstrong bat. Armstrong obliged them by scoring 89 not out in the forty minutes at his disposal, and the scratch eleven won by 37 runs and nine wickets. T he Essex committee are very anxious to add five hundred subscribers to their list dnring the present year. There must be many Essex readers of Cricket who, with a little pressing, would join the county club, and it may be pointed out to them that there is no entrance fee, that the annual subscription is only a guinea, and that the secretary, Mr. O. B. Borradaile, the Essex County Cricket Ground, Leyton, would be delighted to receive the names of new members. CLEMENT. [It is stated on good authority that Clem. Hill contemplates retiring from active cricket. — Itcuter.'] O Clement, Clement, this is hard To hear. We cannot bear it. Your name must he upon the card In future “ tests.” We swear it. What will your colleague, Victor, say (You two were hoys together) If you with him no longer play At punishing the leather ? Must the Australians take the field While you sit in pavilions ? Must they to every i'oeman yield, And sadden waiting millions, Because they can no more rely On you to paste a swerver ? 0 Clement, Clement, go and huy An Adelaide Observer, And see what pretty things it says About your plucky cricket; Then think about the bygone days Before you leave the wicket.
