Cricket 1906

M at 3i, 1906. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 171 A C orrespondent writes : “ In look ing through “ Gilpin’s Western Tour,” published in 1798, I came across a refer ence to cricket at Famham, and I wonder whether the author waB stating a fact. The reference is as follows :— Behind the house (Farnham Castle) extends a park about four miles in circumference, which the bishop found as much neglected and out of order as the house itself. It was cut with unlicensed paths, the trees were mangled to browse the deer, and a cricket ground had so long been suffered that the people conceived they had now a right to it. This last was a great nuisance. Such a scene of riot and disorder, with stands for soiling liquor, just under the castle windows, could not easily be endured. The bishop took the gentlest methods he could to remove the nuisance ; and at length, though not without some difficulty, got it effected. In a very interesting paper which he contributes to Fry's Magazine for June, B. J. T. Bosanquet explains why, about five years ago, he forsook fast bowling for slow, and, aided by the camera, shows how his famous off-break with leg-break action is obtained. All who read the article, and all thinking cricketers should do so, will admit that the author clearly proves that the fingers which are used to obtain the ordinary leg-break are also those employed in imparting the much- discussed off-break. To all who desire to possess a reliable record of last year’s Sussex cricket, no better advice could be given than to pro cure a copy of the Sussex Oounty Cricket Ann'uil for 1906, which is published at a penny by W. E. Nash at 25, Western Road, Brighton. The fact that the annual is edited by Mr. Alfred D. Taylor is sufficient guarantee that the informa tion it contains is absolutely trustworthy. The publication contains several interest ing cartoons by Mr. W. A. Bettesworth, whose name will be very familiar to Cricket readers. LONDON AND OOUNTY BANK v.
