Cricket 1906

M ay 24, 1906. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 155 R. T. C rawford had a very good time last week in both departments of the game, scoring 35 and 41 for the Gentlemen of England v. Oxford Uni versity, and taking twelve wickets for 76 runs against Croydon last Saturday, for Cane Hill Asylum. Altogether his analysis foi both matches was 72 overs, 22 maidens, 182 runs and 16 wickets. In the four matches he has so far played in this season he has scored 332 runs and taken 28 wickets for 220 runs. In the latter department he certainly shows no falling off with his form of last season, when he occupied the sixteenth position amongst our first-class bowlers. E ight years ago Messrs. J. M. Dent and Co. brought out a “ Cricketer’s Birthday Book ” compiled by that most prolific of cricket caterers, Mr. Percy Cross Standing. Another work of the same kind for which Mr. T. Broadbent Trowsdale (Cover Point) is responsible, has j ust been published by the "Walter Scott Publishing Company. If more pretentious in appearance than its predecessor the later volume which, by the way, bears the title of “ The Cricketer’s Birthday Book,” misses the great advantage of its prototype—its handiness of siz9 and corresponding con venience. Otherwise Mr. Trowsdale’s production presents great attractions for cricket enthusiasts. In addition to a list of some thousand players all duly in scribed under their several birth dates, with fac-simile autographs of most of the principal performers, there are 13 action photographs by G. W. Beldam besides a lot of useful information in the shape of tables giving the aggregates of the chief players, English and Austra lian, as well as a glossary of cricket terms and phrases, a concise chronology of cricket, and last, but not least in point of utility, an alphabetical index, provid ing easy reference to the cricketers who figure in the book. O B IT U A R Y . M r . D avid W ykeham W illiams . The death is announced of Mr. David Wykeham Williams, who played for Winchester against Eton in 1857 and two following years. In 1857 and 1858 he did little, but in his last match he scored 36 and 24, contributing largely to Win chester’s success by three wickets. Among his contemporaries were T. P. Garnier and J. W. Haygarth, each of whom afterwards assisted Oxford at Lord’s on three occasions. BRIXTON WANDERERS (2) v. CYPHERS (2 ).- Played at Kent House on May 19. B rixton W anderers (2). W. [It seems that Mr. Chuckerup has been dis cussing, in his usual temperate manner, the situation in Australia, in connection with the Board of Control, and his deliberations have been summed up by his little Day, the poet, as follows :— “ It was the South Australians That give away the show, Though what the doose they did it fcr I ’m bothered if I know. But everybody said,” he roared, “ That they had jiggered up the Board Tasmania and the Melbourne Club Sat tight and would not play ; They even offered money to Entice the men away. And Duff and Co., by Noble led, Accepted Melbourne’s terms, ’tis said. With bell and book, and candle, too, The Sydney council sate, And many a mighty player they Did excommunicate. “ But things like that, you know,” ht swored, “ Must be when you have got a Board. They say there was a shindy then, After the thing was done, And many thousands vowed as how It took the currant bun. But we shall soon see peace restored When South Australia jines the Board.”
