Played at Nottingham on May 17 and 18. Notts, won by nine wickets. On a wicket which assisted the bowlers somewhat, Leicestershire commenced their innings very dis astrously. Before a run had been made De Trafford was clean bowled by Wass, at 8 King was dismissed and at 17 Knight was sent back, whilst by the luncheon interval eight wickets had fallen for 90. Wass and John Gunn bowled well, the visitors’ total amounting to no more than 104. The wicket improved as the day wore on, and was decidedly better when Notts commenced batting than it had been when Leicestershire started their innings. Jones was out to the first ball he received, whilst Iremonger was sent back at 18. The two Gunns then came together, and by watchful cricket added 89 for the third wicket in an hour and a quarter. George Gunn, who made 87 in 170minutes, hit eleven 4’s and was twice missed: John, who drove and cut well, made 59 in 75 minutes, his principal strokes being nine 4’s and a 3. The Leicestershire fielding was very poor throughout the day, Gill especially suffering as the result. At the close of play Notts led by 104 and had three wickets in hand. During the day 312 runs were made for the loss of 17 wickets. On Friday the outstanding wickets added 23 in 20 minutes, Jayes obtaining them all in the course of three overs at a cost of 13 runs. Notts batted three hours and a-half exactly for their score of 231. Leicestershire, 127 behind, lost Wood at 13 for nine, but De Trafford atoned somewhat for this misfortune by hitting up 45 in 65 minutes. Four wickets fell for 50, and five for 52, but Crawford and Coe improved the position by adding 50 together for the sixth wicket in 20 minutes. Jayes and Odell saved the innings defeat, but, when the last wicket fell—at 166, made in a couple of hours—Notts were set only 40 to win. These runs were hit off in 25 minutes for the loss of Iremonger, Leicestershire therefore experiencing defeat by nine wickets. Wass obtained eleven wickets in the match at a cost of just under fifteen runs each, whilst Oates greatly distinguished himself by allowing neither byes nor leg-byes in either innings of his opponents.
