Cricket 1906
148 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME, M at 24, 1906. assist the Gentlemen as “ given men,” such an arrangement not being then considered at all derogatory. The Gentlemen won easily by an innings, but the odds allowed them were evidently too great, for in the return match Lambert alone was given. But the Gentlemen still won, owing chiefly to the fine play of Lord Frederick Beauclerck, who scored 58 and 38 and was probably just then at his best. His lordship was a magnificent batsman ; he used frequently, as if in defiance of the bowlers, to hang his gold watch on the bails ! Surrey, Hampshire and Kentwerethen the leading counties, and each, curiously enough, played England, but only Surrey did sooneven terms. Hampshire, with Lord Fred erick Beauclerck and Lambert, werebeaten by 87 runs at Lord’s, but when, later in the season, they played at Alresford, and received the help of Beldhamand Lambert, they proved victorious by nine wickets. Surrey, meeting England without assistance of any kind, suc cumbed at Lord’s by 93 runs, and at Moulsey Hurst by six wickets, whilst Kent proved successful at Dartford by 127 runs, which was certainly not surprising, as they received the aid of Lord Frederick, Beldham, Lambert and Hammond, who were then the best players in England, HAMPSTEAD v.
